The sun beat down on the dusty State Highway 1, a ribbon of asphalt stretching towards the horizon. Old mate Barry, a man whose truck had seen more miles than most people had seen birthdays, squinted through his windshield. He was humming along to an old blues tune, the rumble of his engine a familiar comfort. He’d been driving these roads for forty years, seen ‘em change and seen ‘em stay the same.

Suddenly, a glint of blue and red flashed in his rearview mirror. Barry, not one for surprises, eased off the accelerator, his weathered hands gripping the wheel a little tighter. He’d heard the whispers, the chatter down at the truck stop – something about new rules, a crackdown. He just hadn’t expected it to be him.

A stern-faced officer approached Barry’s window, her voice crisp and clear. 'Morning, sir. Just conducting a routine check.' Barry nodded, offering a weary smile. He’d seen plenty of these checks.

'Anything I can help you with, officer?' he asked, his voice a low rumble.

'Just ensuring compliance with the latest regulations,' she replied, her eyes scanning his dashboard. 'We're seeing an increase in certain types of incidents, and the NZTA is taking proactive steps.'

Barry grunted. Proactive steps. He’d seen plenty of those, too. Sometimes they helped, sometimes they just added more paperwork to an already long day. He remembered a time when a handshake and a nod was enough to sort things out on the road. Times were changing, he supposed.

The officer pointed to a small sticker on his console. 'This particular device,' she said, her tone unwavering, 'is now subject to stricter guidelines regarding its visibility and placement. It’s all part of the new initiative to minimize driver distraction and improve overall road safety.'

Barry nodded slowly. Distraction. He’d seen plenty of that too, young fellas with their phones glued to their faces, oblivious to the world around them. Maybe these new rules weren’t such a bad idea after all. He’d always been a careful driver, but he understood the need for everyone to be on the same page.

As the officer finished her check and Barry pulled back onto the highway, the sun still beat down, but the road ahead seemed a little clearer. He adjusted his mirrors, took a deep breath, and let the blues tune wash over him once more. The road was still his, and he’d do his part to keep it safe, new rules or not. After all, a safe journey was a journey worth taking.
