P. D. Eastman was an author-illustrator who created many children’s books, including Are You My Mother?, Go, Dog. Go!, and The Best Nest. Trained at the National Academy of Design, he enlisted in the army in 1943 and was assigned to the Signal Corps Film Unit—which was headed by Theodor Geisel, who would eventually become known to the world as Dr. Seuss. After Geisel later approached him to write for his new Beginner Book series at Random House, Eastman published his first book, Sam and the Firefly. Since then, Random House has sold more than 30 million books by P. D. Eastman, and he has become one of the most beloved children’s book authors in the world.

Al Perkins was the author of several Bright and Early Books and Beginner Books, among them Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb; and The Ear Book. Perkins passed away in 1975.

Robert Lopshire wrote and illustrated the Beginner Books Put Me in the Zoo, I Want to Be Somebody New!, and New Tracks I Can Do! He died in 2002.

Joan Heilbroner is best known for her first book, Robert the Rose Horse, which was published in 1961. Acquired by Dr. Seuss when he was editor of Beginner Books, it has been in print for more than 50 years. Her inspiration to write A Pet Named Sneaker came from her grandchildren, Quentin and Katrina, and their talented pet snake, Plato. A graduate of Columbia University, Ms. Heilbroner worked as a school librarian until her retirement.

Marilyn Sadler has been writing and illustrating children's books for 20 years. Her work has received many honors, including an IRA Classroom Choice Award and a Parents’ Choice Award. She lives in Ohio.

these books have questionable content in some of the stories that you may need to explain later or just not purchase. Most likely a product of the time they were written, there is notable cruelty and bullying especially in the digging dog story. It went so far as the characters suggesting letting a dog drown for being bad. I had to stop mid read with my three year old and decide what to say instead of reading that to him. Shocking and disappointed that this kind of story was ever acceptable but buyer be warned. Maybe pre read at the library before you buy if you don’t want to be reading stuff like this to your kids.
For $8, it is hard to go wrong but I would say three of stories are worth it. I Want to be somebody New (not as good as Put Me In the Zoo though), Robert the Rose Horse (a gem) and Gus and the Firefly (cute enough). Two others stories are long and mediocre, perhaps a little mean-spirited (Diggingest Dog and Stop that Ball). The Very Bad Bunny is absolute trash, poorly illustrateted and terrible morality.
These books that are a compilation of multiple Dr. Seuss books are such a deal, and the The Big Red Book of Beginner Books is no exception. You could easily buy each of these books separately and spend $8-12/book, or you can get all these books for a much better price. This RED book includes newer books as well as older books loved since I was a child:

-Stop That Ball
-I Want To Be Somebody New
-Sam and the Firefly
-The Very Bad Bunny
-The Digging-est Dog
-Robert The Rose Horse

I really enjoyed reading these books to my 3 year old daughter, one at a time at bedtime each night, and she loved it too! Each book tells a cute story or life lesson. With these books you can get all 5 colors, red, blue, orange, green, purple and practically have yourself a little Dr. Seuss library! We already have all 5! A great addition to any childs book collection, and saves you a bit of money. Definitely recommend them.
These books are more for late kindergarten to first grade level. My son who was just diagnosed with dyslexia hates to read and really struggles. He loves all the stories in these books. We now have the red, green, and orange books. They keep his interest because they're silly and easier to learn to read because they are beginner. He is getting better and better at reading every day and I feel these books are the reason why.
Purchased as a surprise for my toddlers who absolutely require multiple stories prior to bedtime. We have a number of Dr. Seuss books and were pleased with this addition. I noticed it really compliments/adds to several of the stories from the “Big Blue Book of Beginner Books”. You get to revisit characters like P.J. Funny Bunny, Spot from “Put Me in the Zoo” and at possibly the same boy/artist from “A Fly Went By”. The stories are very cute and imaginative which my toddlers 1.5 and 3 enjoy. I recommend this for any young child’s library.

I have come back and bought all four of these reader books now. My grandson loves them. They rhyme, which helps a new reader, the words are age-appropriate, but not ''simpleton'' words, and the graphics of the book are beautiful and reader-encouraging. I highly recommend these. They are exceptionally nice.
Bought this book along with two others of the same name (different "color"). I have a 5 yr old daughter and a 6 year old son that are learning to read and practicing with the reading that they know. They love these books. I would definitely recommend to anyone with young children that are wanting some beginner "first books". I actually remember some of the books included in these sets from when I was very young. So apparently these books can have a very long lasting fond memory for your children. My daughter just keeps wanting to read them over and over and each time she gets better and better.
I read this book with my 7 year old Granddaughter and first I read it to her and then she reads it to me. She's excited for reading time and has learned many new words. The rhyming helps her figure out what a word could be

Perfect for bedtimes! I got this because I wanted the sequel to "I want to go into the zoo", but this is a collection of fun (and addictive) short stories with great illustrations. Perfect for reading to little ones. It's quite heavy, so probably not ideal for older ones to read to themselves unless they are quite strong, I imagine by the time they can easily hold this they would be too old for these stories.

My 4-year-old student absolutely LOVED the Big Blue Book, but after reading each story 4-5 times, we were ready for a change, and I ordered the Big Red Book. She loves it equally, we have already read two of the stories 4 times. She is learning so many words, and I love the way some words repeat through different stories, so she is not just memorizing one story, but recognizing the words. I highly recommend "The Big ... Book of Beginner books, and will certainly buy other "colours" as well!

We love these compilations! We make it a point to add one to our library for every holiday. Great stories, some of which we grew up on, all compiled in a durable book. Win, win!

These aren't good stories for kids. They are hard for beginner readers and one is about a bad dog that the owner said he was going to take him back to the pound to live on a stone floor. I love the green book and I was so disappointed by this one...
My three year old loves this book. Fun to read it to him.
