Did this mother go too far? Or did she go just far enough?
A viral video of a mother disciplining her teenage daughter is being met with mixed reactions online.
In the video, first streamed during a Facebook live session, Georgia resident Shanavia Miller is seen beating and screaming at her 16-year-old daughter Nia Green while accusing her of having sex with her boyfriend in their home. During the five minute long clip, Miller makes it clear that her intent is to embarrass the teen.
“I’m this way,” she tells the person filming while she hits Green with an unidentified object. “You wanna embarrass me on TV? You wanna embarrass me on f—-n’ social media?” Miller slapped her daughter in the face and punched her on her body. “You wanna be a lil THOT, huh? You think that sh-t cute, huh? Being a THOT?”
Green can be heard in the background expressing denial before her mother starts in again. “You’re only sixteen and you want to be a THOT. Get your grades up in school before you think about opening up your legs and trying to stunt on f—ing Facebook. Keep your f—–g room clean.”
After turning the camera on herself briefly, Miller goes back to attacking Green, suggesting that the girl’s actions reflect badly on her as a parent. “You got me looking bad out here like I ain’t no good m—-f—-n parent. I do my best! And look how you out here looking like I don’t give a f–k.” Here, she directly addresses viewers. “Now, I’mma need y’all to send this viral, please,” she says. “Share this.”
Public reaction to the video has been mixed. Some feel Miller went too far, while others said they understand her outrage and sympathize with her intentions. Other people simply disagree with Miller’s decision to broadcast the confrontation on social media.
Miller took to Facebook again after the video went viral and responded to the backlash. “I love my daughter with all my heart,” she said in a message posted on what is believed to be Green’s Facebook page. “Whatever happens after this, oh well, my daughter is not going to disrespect me or herself for nobody…lesson learned.”

In this clip from Tuesday's new Dating #No Filter , enthusiastic blind dater Abby dabbles in BDSM for the first time. The problem is, Abby isn't totally sure she's into BDSM. In fact, when her match Jewel reveals their debut date activity—a lesson on "how to give a good old-fashioned spanking," proctored by a professional who informs the pair right away that "one's gonna take it and one's gonna receive it" during the course of their rendezvous—she looks downright terrified.
"Poor Abby, get her outside!" shouts comedian Cara Connors , before co-commentator Nina Parker chimes in. "Abby is like, 'I did not know this is what I was gonna do today when I woke up and put on my little purple t-shirt,'" cracks the Nightly Pop co-host.
And pan back to Abby, who's already admitted she's never really done this before but is moseying on over to the "spank bench" nonetheless, where Jewel (a BDSM fan who's loving this right now) is about to show her how it's done.
"You will receive 10 on each cheek and you will endure it," she instructs, to which Abby—bent over the apparatus already, t-shirt, denim jacket and all—solemnly says, "OK." They do agree on a safe word though! Per Abby's suggestion, it's "mercy".
"I'm saying 'mercy' for her," Nina interjects, as Jewel counts, "Three, four, five…"
Cara points out that "they haven't even asked each other their favorite color yet," and her partner agrees this is quite the installation of introductory foreplay. "Like, let me at least get an appetizer first!" Nina exclaims.

The Kidnapping and Torture of Mary Stauffer

Mary Stauffer and her eight-year-old daughter, Beth, were just leaving a beauty salon in Roseville, Minnesota on May 16, 1980, when a man appeared and forced them into his car at gunpoint. Mary didn’t recognize him at the time, but she would soon learn that 15 years ago, he had been a student in her high school math class.
That former student was 29-year-old Ming Sen Shiue, who had developed a dangerous obsession with Stauffer . Unbeknownst to her, he had stalked her family and tried to abduct her at least four other times before the day he forced Mary Stauffer and her daughter into his car. Over the next 53 days, he held them at his house, repeatedly raping Mary and threatening Beth until they finally managed to escape.
At the start of the mother and daughter’s ordeal—right after the gunpoint abduction—Shiue demanded that Stauffer drive his car to a remote location and park. He then bound Mary and Beth’s hands and shoved them into his car trunk. He began to drive, then stopped the car and opened the trunk to reprimand them for praying too loudly. He covered their mouths with duct tape and continued driving, then stopped and opened the trunk again to find Mary had partially freed her daughter. Angry at this, he began threatening them.
That’s when two young boys noticed something was going on. One of them walked over to the trunk, spied Mary and Beth, and said, “Whoa.” Before he could say anything else, Shiue threw the boy, a six-year-old named Jason Wilkman, into the trunk and drove away. The next time Shiue stopped the car, he took Wilkman out of the trunk, fatally struck him on the head with a metal rod and left his body in the woods. Police did not find Wilkman’s remains until after Shiue’s capture.
Once Shiue arrived at his house in Roseville, he locked Mary and Beth in a closet that was 21 inches wide and four feet long. The next day, Shiue took Mary out, tied her up in the living room, and revealed his identity as her former math student. He also told her he’d been looking for her for a long time.
Five years before, Shiue had broken into her family-in-laws’ home in Duluth, Minnesota, because he mistakenly thought she lived there. He’d threatened her in-laws with a gun, tied them up and told them he’d kill them if they reported the break-in. Then in 1979, he learned Mary and her family were living in an apartment in St. Paul at Bethel University, where her husband worked. He tried to break into the apartment three separate times, at least once by trying to drill holes in the floor beneath Mary’s bed, according to the court filing for State v. Ming Sen Shiue .
Now that he had captured Mary, Shiue began to rape her daily. He filmed the assaults, which sometimes lasted hours. Complaining that Mary didn’t show him affection during these assaults, he once tried to suffocate Beth until Mary kissed him on the lips to make him stop. During all this time, he continued to go to work at the electronics store he owned, keeping Mary and her daughter locked in the closet while he was away. The only time they left the house was when he brought them to a job fair in Chicago tied up in the back of a rented Winnebago.
On July 7, Mary and Beth finally escaped. Though she was chained to her daughter, Mary managed to break open the door and call the police from Shiue’s phone. She told them who she was and where she was, and then made her way outside with her daughter—still chained to her—to hide and wait for the police, who arrived minutes later.
After Shiue’s arrest, there were two trials: a federal trial for the kidnapping of Mary and Beth Stauffer and a state trial for the murder of Jason Wilkman. Thomas Berg , the former U. S. Attorney who prosecuted the kidnapping case, didn’t have much contact with Shiue, who did not testify at the federal trial. However, Berg did witness one of Shiue’s violent outbursts.
“I was questioning Mary Stauffer, the kidnapping victim, on the witness stand from the podium in federal court, and I just kind of sensed that something was going on behind me,” he tells A&E True Crime . “I turned, and the defendant Ming Shiue had gotten out of his chair on the other side of counsel table and was coming up, going after Mrs. Stauffer, the witness. So I just kind of instinctively grabbed him.”
Shiue didn’t manage to attack Stauffer that day, but he did during the second trial for Wilkman’s murder. While Mary was testifying on the witness stand at that second trial, Shiue rushed at her and slashed her face with a knife he’d snuck in (Berg did not work on the second trial and was not present for that attack). The wound required 62 stitches.
Shiue was convicted in both trials and received two sentences to be served concurrently: a sentence of 30 years to life for the federal kidnapping charge and a sentence of 40 years for the state murder charge. He first became eligible for parole in 2010, but remains in prison.
On October 5, 2019 Lifetime aired Abducted: The Mary Stauffer Story , a drama based on the kidnapping that took place 40 years ago.
In an interview with Lifetime, Mary Stauffer says it was important for her to share her story and there were times where she questioned her faith. “We pray for [Shiue],” she says. “We hated what he did, but we didn’t hate him.”
Mary says after her ordeal, which she says “doesn’t define her,” she and her husband were able to finish their missionary careers and retire. They have been happy to see their children get married and have children of their own.
“He didn’t get to ruin our lives,” says Beth Stauffer. “He ruined his life.”
