Moises Ballesteros Makes MLB Debut History

BREAKING: Moises Ballesteros Shines in MLB Debut with Chicago Cubs

Chicago, IL — May 13, 2025

In a thrilling debut for the Chicago Cubs, 21-year-old catching prospect Moises Ballesteros made an immediate impact, helping secure a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

Ballesteros, called up from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day, wasted no time introducing himself to the big leagues. In his first at-bat, he laced a two-run double down the right-field line, driving in Cody Bellinger and Christopher Morel to give the Cubs an early lead. The Venezuelan-born catcher later added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, finishing the night 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs.

Defensively, Ballesteros impressed as well, handling Cubs ace Justin Steele with ease and throwing out Cardinals speedster Masyn Winn attempting to steal second in the third inning.

'It’s a dream come true,' Ballesteros said postgame, still wearing a celebratory cream-colored jersey covered in shaving cream from a rookie hazing ritual. 'I just wanted to contribute any way I could. To do it in front of these fans is something I’ll never forget.'

Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised the young backstop’s poise: 'He looked like he’d been here for years. That’s not an easy spot to step into, but Moises was ready.'

Ballesteros, signed as an international free agent in 2021, has rapidly climbed the Cubs’ farm system thanks to his advanced hitting approach and strong defensive skills. With starting catcher Miguel Amaya struggling at the plate this season, Ballesteros may have just earned himself an extended look in the majors.

The Cubs will look to build on the momentum as they continue their series against the Cardinals tomorrow night. One thing’s for sure: All eyes will be on Moises Ballesteros.
