Los niños mayores generalmente manifiestan dolor de cabeza, náuseas, vómito, visión doble, decaimiento, trastornos para caminar.

Primero corroborar a través de exámanes (Ultrasonido, TAC) si existe el problema y sobre todo tratar de determinar la causa del mismo.
¿ Cómo se trata la hidrocefalia ?
El tratamiento tiene como fin disminuir el volumen de LCR acumulado, y esto se logra con la colocación de una válvula de derivación del LCR.
Es un sistema de drenaje que tiene como fin llevar el exceso de LCR que hay en el cráneo a otra zona del cuerpo donde es reabsorbido, los sitios más comunes son el abdomen y el corazón.
1- Catéter ventricular : es un pequeño tubo flexible que se coloca en el cerebro, en una de las cavidades donde está el LCR acumulado.
2- Reservorio : es una pequeña bombita que regula la cantidad de líquido que se drena y que además permite al médico valorar el funcionamiento de la válvula, así como tomar muestras de LCR, por medio de una punción.
3- Catéter distal : es otro tubo flexible, más largo que lleva el LCR al sitio donde es absorvido; se deja largo para permitir el crecimiento del niño. Las válvulas regulan la presión a que se drena el LCR y las hay varios tipos, de baja, mediana y alta presión, así como otras de presión regulable.
¿ Qué cuidados se deben tener con un niño con válvula ?
-No tocar la válvula salvo por indicación médica.
-No acostar al niño sobre la válvula, ya que la presión sobre la misma puede maltratar la piel. Cuando el niño se movilice solo y pueda reaccionar al dolor, el mismo se acostará de la mejor manera que le acomode.
¿ Cuáles son los síntomas si la válvula funciona mal?
¿ Puede prevenirse o detectarse de antemano que una válvula funcione mal?
No. Desafortunadamente puede ser en cualquier momento, o nunca.
¿ Por qué la válvula puede funcionar mal ?
Hay que recordar que una válvula es un "cuerpo extraño" al organismo y que es una tubería de material sintético, por consiguiente puede funcionar mal porque:

Más o menos 6 de cada 10 niños, en algún momento de su vida deberán ser sometidos a una revisión o cambio de válvula.
Mientras la válvula funcione bien no es necesario cambiarla. En algunas ocasiones por el crecimiento del niño puede que el catéter distal se rompa, se salga de su sitio o se desprenda de la válvula, en estos casos el niño presentara datos de mal funcionamiento valvular y el padre se dará cuenta. Otros casos en que es necesario el cambio de válvula cuando ha sido afectada por alguna infección.
¿ Puede el niño dejar de necesitar la válvula ?
Esto sucede en algunas ocasiones, generalmente porque la obstrucción al paso del LCR desaparece. Sin embargo puede que esto pase desapercibido sin que signifique ningún problema para el niño y tampoco es necesario intervenirlo solo por retirar la válvula ya que esta no producira ningún problema al permanecer en su sitio.
