Ian Wickham. Pablo Escobar. Topic last updated on May at Username: Password: Remember Me? Lost Password I want to Sign-Up. Ski Forum Index Ski Chatter. Hi New skier just back from my first weeks ski holiday in La Tania in the 3 Valleys. Had a great time once I got out of La Tania as not beginner friendly slopes until our last day when my partners skis were stolen from outside Le Sporting restaurant in Meribel, 50 yards away from the police station. We had spent most of our time in Courchevel as the slopes were kinder there and my partner had never been to Meribel and didnt know what it was like. Skis and poles left everyday along the fences, on the ground etc and no problems at all. We had split the ski's on occassion and I guess we got complacent. We went for lunch for 40 mins to return to an empty spot where my partners skis had been. Totally gutted. Put a dampener on the holiday big time. Went to the information office where we were told it didnt happen often Susprisingly all the shop keepers have an excellent hold of english yet the police cant speak english at all, my french wasnt very good either mind you but I dont work in a tourist area The officer told us it happened everyday and handed out a form for us to fill in I take it it happens so often they have no interest in catching the perpetrators??? No CCTV??? No details asked for us to show where they were placed or anything. Perhaps the cops are helping thierselves, who knows If you are offered an almost brand new pair of Nordica skis and Leki poles without the wrist strap as its still attached to my partners gloves then please give me a shout A sour taste has been left in my mouth after this Moan over I know it must seem a complete pain in the neck, but it seems sccording to reports it happens a lot in the three valleys area, in thirty years of skiing I have not experienced theft of any kind. Hi Dixiefee, Best of luck with getting your money back - and keep an eye on Ebay! We've always hired skis, and it seems they don't bother to nick hired ones at least we've never had ours nicked and this time our skis actually had 'rental' or something like that written across the length of them. I'm glad to hear you had a good holiday apart from this. I was in Courchevel a few weeks ago and I reckon it's a great place to ski. I think ski theft in Meribel featured in another thread so it does seem to be an increasingly frequent problem. On my recent trip to Flaine , I heard of two people having their skis nicked so the problem is not confined to Meribel and at least one of these were hire skis. However, perhaps it is time for resorts and businesses to provide more secure facilities though whether we would be prepared to pay for them is a whole other question  I guess we all need to be more careful with our gear, especially as insurance companies unlikely to pay out if skis left lying around outside bars and restaurants. Apart from ski splitting, I am not sure what you are supposed to do - bringing the skis into a restaurant is obviously not a runner. It happens everywhere, don't let it put you off a particular resort. Keep an eye on them or lock them up - I wouldn't be surprised if your insurance doesn't pay out on the basis that you left them totally unattended for 40 minutes. Resorts should start installing the skikey system - it really is great and gives me the illusion of security. From the sounds of it, they would clean up. Hey Thanks for all the posts The restaurant we were in did not have anywhere to put skis and there was nowhere safe to put them within the restaurant so obviously we followed suit of everyone else and put them against the fence line. Perhaps it is time for these busy resort areas to take a bit of responsibility and install something where skis can be left securely, being new to skiing I dont know what the options are. I do think in busy areas like the area of Meribel should at least have CCTV, they have it in Courchevel and I know from speaking to people there is not as much of a problem with ski theft over there, perhaps it is a deterent and extra patroling from officers during busy spells would perhaps work. I saw some officers in Courchevel and the only ones I saw in Meribel were in the office asking each other if they wanted a coffee lol Its happened now and we can only hope the insurance pays out. It has certainly put me off a little bit but perhaps this is only while it is still fresh, will keep taking lessons and probably pop to the slopes a few times, artificial and indoor snow ones and see what happens next holidays Oh and I have my beady eye on ebay already. Not that it will make much difference as we still have to prove the skis were ours, our little scottish flag stickers would no doubt have been pealed off by now Just get a simple cable lock. If someone is determined it won't put them off but it can act as a deterrent to the opportunist. Next time you buy skis you should record the serial numbers they are a unique identifier which is the only real way of telling if they are yours. J2Ski Sites for Close. They have been in Meribel for years and after a successful season I am pleased to report that La Maison will be opening its doors once again next winter.

Last time it was all about using two wheels, whether on a road bike or mountain bike. As mentioned in the previous post, August this year was an incredibly hot month in France. Several times I experienced 38 and 39 degrees when popping down the valley to do a weekly shop. Thankfully it didn't reach these figures in resort or higher up the mountain, but it was stifling all the same. Although not a great look, a lightweight floppy hat was the go-to piece of headwear. One of our favourite hikes is to aim for the wonderful Refuge du Saut on the edge of the Vanoise National Park. The River Doron features strongly and you can see on the above photo that the colour of this water is milky. There's a lovely cooling breeze that comes off this glacial melt by the way!? If you ever make it to the top of the Mont Vallon in winter on the ski lift, you get a wonderful view of this beautiful glacier. If you are a comfortable red piste skier, I'd strongly recommend a trip up the Mont Vallon bubble for this view, as well as the ski back down again. Finding the route for this hike is pretty straightforward. Then there's a section that I call the 'Gut Buster' that's quite sharp and gives you a great workout, for about 30 to 40 minutes. At the top of the 'Gut Buster', after a deserved flapjack and guzzle of water, you continue south towards the Refuge du Saut. As skiers, most of us will have our favourite ski pistes. You know these pistes, we search them out the first couple of days of a ski holiday. This hike to the Refuge du Saut is our equivalent when hiking. Another hike that we took was above the quaint ski resort called Pralognan. As the eagle flies, it's only the other side of the Courchevel Valley, but it feels like a different world. Pralognan is sometimes described as a mini Chamonix. This area is also on the edge of the Vanoise National Park, and has several glaciers including the Grande Casse which is visible from our 3 Valleys ski area. There's a hike from the Refuge Les Barmettes a mountain restaurant in the winter that is a popular route up to the stunning Lac des Vaches. This lac has a row of steeping stones which allows you to cross. And guess what? It is soo pretty it will knock your hiking socks off Harriet and I started this hike just after 8. I was last there during a ski touring trip fifteen odd years ago. I remember the area being incredibly pretty. I was torn between suggesting we head up there, or play it safe with the high temperatures and turn back to head home and beat the heat. Well, Harriet was happy either way, so I decided to risk it. Unfortunately this meant we were hiking through the 'Death Zone' of between midday and two o'clock. Although we took shelter for a cooling drink in the brilliant Refuge, the heat and strong sun took a vicelike grip on me, and I was a bit too close to having heat stroke on the way back to the car! A stunning walk, that was rescued by Harriet when she provided an emergency can of Coke from her rucksack. Not to mention the soft drink and huge bowl of cooling ice cream at the Refuge Les Barmettes. That'll do for now regarding the fantastic hiking. I'll post again soon and include some of my favourite photos that I took whilst on holiday, including some of these cheeky chaps. Do come back soon, and in the meantime don't forget to Live With Passion. Email me at hello skihemsley. Ski blog Ski gallery Contact.
