Meechie Johnson Transfers to UCF, Looks to Elevate Knights’ Basketball Program

Orlando, FL – June 10, 2024 – Former Ohio State and South Carolina guard Meechie Johnson has announced his decision to transfer to the University of Central Florida (UCF), bringing his dynamic scoring and veteran leadership to the Knights’ roster as they prepare for their second season in the Big 12 Conference.

Johnson, a 6’2' combo guard, spent the past two seasons at South Carolina, where he emerged as one of the team’s top offensive threats. During the 2023-24 season, he averaged 14.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, helping the Gamecocks secure an NCAA Tournament berth. His ability to create shots and knock down clutch three-pointers makes him a valuable addition for UCF, which is looking to improve upon its 17-15 record from last season.

'I’m excited to join UCF and compete in the Big 12,' Johnson said in a statement. 'This program has a lot of potential, and I want to help take it to the next level. The coaching staff and the players have a great vision, and I’m ready to contribute.'

Johnson began his college career at Ohio State before transferring to South Carolina in 2022. Now, with one year of eligibility remaining, he brings experience and a proven track record in high-major conferences. UCF head coach Johnny Dawkins praised Johnson’s versatility and leadership.

'Meechie is a proven scorer and a competitor,' Dawkins said. 'He’s played in big games, and his ability to make plays will be huge for us. We’re thrilled to have him join our family.'

UCF, which joined the Big 12 in 2023, has been aggressive in the transfer portal this offseason, adding Johnson alongside other key pieces. Fans are hopeful that his arrival will help the Knights make a deeper run in conference play and potentially return to March Madness.

Johnson is expected to be a focal point of UCF’s backcourt when the 2024-25 season tips off this fall.
