Local Hero Luigi Mangione Saves Historic Bakery from Closing

Naples, Italy – In a heartwarming turn of events, beloved local baker Luigi Mangione has rescued Pasticceria Sorrento, a historic Naples bakery that faced permanent closure after 95 years in business.

Mangione, a third-generation pastry chef, stepped in when the aging owner, Antonio Bianchi, announced his retirement with no successor to carry on the family legacy. Known for his famous sfogliatelle and rum-soaked babà, Mangione couldn’t bear the thought of the iconic bakery shutting its doors.

'I grew up coming here with my grandfather,' Mangione told reporters. 'The flavors, the memories—it’s part of Naples' soul. I had to do something.'

After weeks of negotiations, Mangione struck a deal to take over the bakery while preserving its original recipes and staff. He even convinced Bianchi to stay on as a consultant to ensure the pastries remain authentic.

The news has delighted locals, who flooded social media with support. 'Luigi is a guardian of tradition,' said longtime customer Sofia Esposito. 'This bakery is more than sweets—it’s our history.'

A grand reopening is set for next month, with Mangione promising a few surprises—including a new dessert inspired by his grandmother’s secret recipe.

For now, Naples can rest easy knowing its culinary heritage is in good hands.
