I guess my question is how are they different from the standard Martins both in build process and sound quality? Any opinions appreciated. Tannin Frets: March I look at the prices and just switch off. I'm sure they are very good indeed, but for that money I could buy at least one and quite possibly two hand-made single-luthier instruments crafted to my exact specifications. I generally don't play any instrument I'm not thinking of buying so I've never picked up a Martin Custom Shop guitar. Presumably the custom shop ones are similar. Buggered if I'm going to pay that much for a name. But f they aren't very nice instruments indeed, I'll eat my boots. Tannin said:. Build quality - Martin generally has a good baseline level of quality control and choice of wood in their standard models. Sound quality - all things acoustic, the sonic variations can be quite different, regardless of whether it is CS or standard production. Buying a CS through Martin won't guarantee a better sounding instrument than a standard. But it will give you a great choice of wood type and construction methods, which might ultimately provide you a closer approximation to the tone you are chasing if you know what you're after. With any acoustic purchase, way more-so than an electric - go crazy trying a bunch of them , new or second hand, until you find one that sounds and plays like you want. Smellyfingers said:. TheMadMick Frets: I have a low end Martin and it;'s a nice guitar. I've 2 Avalons and both of them blow the Martin away. So even if the CS is much better than the run of the mill stuff, I'd still go for a specialist maker - Avalon, Brook, etc. March edited March Buy an Atkin, it beat out 4 high end Martins when I last shop tested dreadnoughts. TheMadMick said:. It's not really a question of better it's a question of different. RickLucas Frets: I don't know about custom shop Martins, but I played a few standard models when buying a dreadnought for a friend a few years ago, and as expected, they all varied. None were bad, but I was expecting the HD28 to be the one. I eventually chose the one that that sounded best to me, the D35, which in this instance was a few hundred cheaper than the HD Since then, I have bought a D18 for myself as I wanted a mahogany dread. The Martin is great, but I think if I had taken the Blueridge with me for reference when trying out the D18, I probably would not have bought it. I think it is a good idea to play lots of guitars before making a purchase, especially in the case of an acoustic. Let your ears and fingers guide you. You may surprise yourself and save some money at the same time. Mellish Frets: The trebles wouldn't ring despite a string change and the top gave odd reflected lightbulb images on the left upper bout. Don't assume that, just because it's custom shop, it has to be better. This is not anti-Gibson,I'm a fan. It's just to say be careful. Ungulate Frets: TheOtherDennis Frets: If you have an itch for a Martin, nothing will scratch it but a Martin. That's not to say other guitars aren't equal to or even better, it's just something about human nature that we aren't satisfied until we have what we really want. I've always wanted a Martin, but I've never found one I'd be happy with. Still want one, though. Who knows? So try them out, see what you think, and then decide on that, not what we think. Again, not denigrating anyone else's opinion, just saying that it's their opinion, not yours, and as it's your money If you must have sex with a frog, wear a condom. If you want the frog to have fun, rib it. TheOtherDennis said:. Dreadnought28 Frets: 1. The difficulty with acoustic guitars is that a new, subdued, guitar can sound wonderful after a few months or years of playing. This, in my experience, is particularly true of Martins. Indeed, an older guitar not played for a while can go to sleep and need sustained playing to bring it fully back to life. DavidR Frets: If you were coming to acoustics for the first time you would wonder why Martins are so expensive. They are just good guitars amongst a large number of other good guitars and the algorithmic process which is buying an instrument would mean, in most cases, that you would end up with a guitar which wasn't a Martin, because they would have been ruled out on the grounds of cost. If you want a Martin, love the tradition and - granted - the slightly distinctive tone, buy one. Otherwise, pay less on a just as good 'non-Martin' and be just as happy. If not more. In C21, for most players, 'good' no longer means expensive, and it doesn't have to mean Martin. A great Martin is a fantastic thing - there's no argument there. Gandalph Frets: Gandalph said:. Kilgore Frets: It took Martin from to to produce a million guitars. It took only a further 12 years to produce the next million. Martin is a mass manufacturer. If you like the idea of buying into the history, family owned company, etc, that's fine get a CS from Nazareth. I'm sure it will be a fine instrument and it will probably hold it's value Personally, If had the money, I would be looking at Santa Cruz, Collings, Bourgeois, Huss and Dalton, etc, if I wanted an 'American made' instrument.
