I'm sure they are very good indeed, but for that money I could buy at least one and quite possibly two hand-made single-luthier instruments crafted to my exact specifications. I generally don't play any instrument I'm not thinking of buying so I've never picked up a Martin Custom Shop guitar. Presumably the custom shop ones are similar. Sound quality - all things acoustic, the sonic variations can be quite different, regardless of whether it is CS or standard production. Buying a CS through Martin won't guarantee a better sounding instrument than a standard. But it will give you a great choice of wood type and construction methods, which might ultimately provide you a closer approximation to the tone you are chasing if you know what you're after.
