Marist Softball Triumphs in Extra-Inning Thriller

Marist Softball Stuns Top-Seeded Opponent in Dramatic Extra-Inning Victory

Poughkeepsie, NY — May 18, 2025 — In a thrilling upset, the Marist College Red Foxes softball team defeated the nationally ranked Fairfield Stags 4-3 in a 10-inning marathon at Gartland Field on Saturday afternoon. The victory marks Marist’s first win over a top-25 opponent this season and keeps their MAAC Tournament hopes alive.

The game was a pitcher’s duel for the first six innings, with Marist’s ace, junior right-hander Kelsey Higgins, matching Fairfield’s star pitcher, Emma Walinski, strike for strike. The Red Foxes broke the deadlock in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Ava Beamesderfer launched a two-run homer to left field, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

However, Fairfield responded in the top of the ninth with a clutch two-out RBI single to force extra innings. The Stags took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th, but Marist refused to back down. With two runners on and two outs, senior captain Mia Recenello delivered a game-tying single, setting the stage for freshman phenom Jenna Peterson, who drove in the winning run with a walk-off double.

'This team never quits,' said Marist head coach Joe Ausanio. 'We’ve faced adversity all season, but today showed the heart of this group. Kelsey was phenomenal in the circle, and our young players stepped up when it mattered most.'

The Red Foxes (22-18, 12-6 MAAC) now sit in third place in the conference standings with two regular-season games remaining. A strong finish could secure them a high seed in next week’s MAAC Tournament.

Marist will close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Quinnipiac on Sunday, where they’ll look to build momentum for a potential championship run.
