Title: The Rise of the Pride

It was the fall of 2023, and the Hofstra Pride men’s basketball team was at a crossroads. After a heartbreaking loss in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship game the previous season, the team was determined to rewrite their story. But this year was different. This year, they had a secret weapon: a freshman phenom named Jalen Carter.

Jalen, a 6'7' forward from Brooklyn, had been overlooked by major Division I programs despite his undeniable talent. Hofstra’s head coach, Craig 'Speedy' Claxton, a former NBA player and Hofstra alum, saw something special in Jalen during a summer league game. He offered him a scholarship on the spot, and Jalen accepted, eager to prove himself.

The season started rocky. The team was young, and chemistry was still developing. Jalen struggled to adjust to the pace of college basketball, and the Pride stumbled to a 4-5 record in their first nine games. But during a late-night practice after a tough loss to a local rival, something clicked. Jalen and senior point guard Elijah Johnson, the team’s captain, stayed behind to work on pick-and-roll plays. Their connection on the court sparked a newfound energy in the team.

As the season progressed, the Pride began to gel. Jalen’s athleticism and relentless work ethic inspired his teammates. Elijah’s leadership kept the group focused, and sharpshooter Marcus Lee found his rhythm from beyond the arc. The Pride went on a 12-game winning streak, climbing to the top of the CAA standings.

But the real test came in March. The CAA Tournament was held in Washington, D.C., and Hofstra entered as the No. 2 seed. Their first game was a nail-biter against Towson, but Jalen’s clutch block in the final seconds secured the win. In the semifinals, Marcus Lee hit a career-high seven three-pointers to carry the team to victory.

The championship game was against their archrival, Northeastern. The game was a battle from start to finish. With 10 seconds left on the clock and Hofstra trailing by one, Elijah Johnson drove to the basket but was cut off by two defenders. He kicked the ball out to Jalen, who was waiting at the top of the key. Jalen hesitated for a split second, then launched a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded. The ball swished through the net, and the Hofstra bench erupted in celebration. The Pride had won their first CAA championship in over a decade, earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

In the Big Dance, Hofstra was seeded 13th and faced a powerhouse 4th-seeded team from the Big Ten. Against all odds, Jalen Carter delivered a performance for the ages, scoring 28 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. The Pride pulled off a stunning upset, advancing to the second round for the first time in school history.

Though their Cinderella run ended in the next game, the Hofstra Pride returned to Long Island as heroes. Jalen Carter was named CAA Rookie of the Year, and Coach Claxton was hailed as a visionary leader. The team’s journey inspired the campus and the community, proving that with heart, hustle, and a little bit of magic, anything is possible.

And for Jalen Carter, it was only the beginning.
