Tulsa Braces for Unpredictable Weather: Severe Storms and Rapid Temperature Shifts Expected

Tulsa, OK – October 25, 2023 – Residents of Tulsa are being urged to prepare for a rollercoaster of weather conditions over the next 48 hours, as meteorologists predict a dramatic shift from unseasonably warm temperatures to severe thunderstorms and potential flash flooding.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather advisory for the Tulsa metropolitan area, warning of a strong cold front moving in from the west. This system is expected to clash with the warm, humid air currently hovering over the region, creating ideal conditions for severe weather.

Today’s Forecast: Warm and Windy
Tulsans enjoyed a sunny and warm Wednesday, with temperatures reaching a high of 82°F—nearly 15 degrees above the average for this time of year. However, strong southerly winds gusting up to 35 mph have been a precursor to the incoming changes.

Thursday: Severe Storms on the Horizon
By Thursday afternoon, the NWS predicts scattered thunderstorms will develop, with some potentially turning severe. The primary concerns include damaging wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center has placed Tulsa under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather.

'Heavy rainfall is also a significant concern,' said NWS meteorologist Sarah Collins. 'We could see 2 to 3 inches of rain in a short period, which may lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and near creeks and rivers.'

Friday: A Chilly Wake-Up Call
As the cold front sweeps through the region late Thursday night, temperatures are expected to plummet. Friday’s high will struggle to reach 55°F, with brisk north winds making it feel even colder. Overnight lows could dip into the upper 30s, a stark contrast to the warm conditions earlier in the week.

Residents Urged to Prepare
Local authorities are advising residents to secure outdoor furniture, clear gutters, and have a plan in place in case of severe weather. 'We’re asking everyone to stay weather-aware,' said Tulsa Emergency Management Director Mark Watkins. 'Have multiple ways to receive alerts, and if you hear thunder, head indoors immediately.'

The Tulsa Public Works Department has also deployed additional crews to monitor drainage systems and respond to any flooding issues.
