Local Hero Jared Young Saves Family from House Fire

Springfield, IL – May 28, 2025

In a dramatic rescue early this morning, local resident Jared Young, 32, risked his life to save a family of four from a burning home on Elm Street. Firefighters say the blaze started around 2:30 AM due to an electrical malfunction in the basement.

According to witnesses, Young was driving home from his late shift at the hospital when he noticed smoke pouring from the two-story house. Without hesitation, he rushed to the scene, banging on doors and shouting to alert the sleeping family inside.

'I just reacted,' Young said afterward. 'I saw the smoke, heard the smoke alarms going off, and knew I had to help.'

After helping the parents and their two children escape safely, Young even assisted firefighters in containing the flames before emergency crews arrived. The family, though shaken, suffered only minor smoke inhalation thanks to Young’s quick actions.

Fire Chief Daniel Reyes praised Young’s bravery, calling him a 'true hero.' 'Without his intervention, this could have been a tragedy,' Reyes said.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced family, while the community has already started a fundraiser to help them rebuild. As for Young, he remains humble, insisting he only did what anyone would do.

'I’m just glad everyone’s safe,' he said.
