Local Hero Pedro Moreno Saves Stranded Hikers in Mountain Rescue

MORELIA, MEXICO – In an act of bravery and quick thinking, local guide Pedro Moreno led a dramatic rescue mission to save a group of stranded hikers in the rugged mountains of Michoacán.

The incident occurred late Friday evening when a family of four, visiting from Mexico City, lost their way during a trek near the Pico de Tancítaro. As temperatures dropped and visibility worsened, the hikers—including two children—called emergency services, sparking a search effort.

Pedro Moreno, a seasoned mountaineer and volunteer with the Michoacán Rescue Brigade, immediately joined the operation. Using his extensive knowledge of the terrain, Moreno navigated steep cliffs and dense forest to locate the family within hours.

'I grew up in these mountains—I know their dangers and their secrets,' said Moreno, 42, after the rescue. 'When I heard children were involved, I knew we had to move fast.'

Authorities praised Moreno’s efforts, crediting him with preventing a potential tragedy. The rescued hikers were treated for mild dehydration and exhaustion but are expected to make a full recovery.

'Pedro is a true hero,' said local fire chief Ricardo Torres. 'His courage and skill saved lives tonight.'

The Michoacán state government has announced plans to honor Moreno with a civic award for his bravery. Meanwhile, the rescued family has vowed to return—next time, with a professional guide.
