"Going through life, you try to cover and hide, but it doesn't really work," says the Orange Is the New Black star, 30, who at first turned down Allure 's request to pose nude. "I said no initially, thought about it, and said no again," she says. "But I'm a black transgender woman. I felt this could be really powerful for the communities that I represent. Black women are not often told that we're beautiful unless we align with certain standards. Trans women certainly are not told we're beautiful. Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about herself might be inspiring to some other folks. There's beauty in the things we think are imperfect. That sounds very cliché, but it's true." Cox wanted these pictures for herself, too: "I honestly just want to make myself happy most, and if other people like it, then that's great. If they don't, then I'm still happy."
"There's a strength to the portrait that I'm really proud of," says the Furious 7 star. No kidding. Brewster, 35, runs six days a week, meditates twice a day, and mixes in "some weird Cirque du Soleil–type acrobatic work," she says. "Having to wear those tight outfits in the [ Fast and Furious ] franchise has helped me keep fitness a part of my life."
Have those Fast and Furious workouts changed your body?
"My legs used to be my least-favorite body part, but now they're really strong and muscular."
Did you tell your husband that you'd be posing nude?
"I asked if he had any reservations. He said, 'Just don't do full frontal.' He'll be pleasantly surprised."
"I'm having more fun posing nude or being in a bikini or doing love scenes than I ever did before because it hit me: This is fleeting, and in a couple of years I won't be able to do this, so just enjoy it."
Do you walk differently when naked?
"It depends whether someone is watching."
Were you raised in a household where nudity was no big deal?
"I was raised in Brazil for part of my life, where people are pretty open abouttheir bodies, so yeah. The bikinis are kind of nonexistent, so you might as well be naked."
"I walked in nervous and vulnerable," says Winnick, 37. And that's not a familiar feeling for the Vikings star, a third-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and licensed bodyguard. "There's a confidence that comes from knowing you can defend yourself," she says. In the end, "posing nude made me feel more free and empowered."
"I called my girlfriends and asked them to pose naked to show me what positions look good. I have a few crazy photos on my phone."
What's your nude comfort level at home?
"I'll do the dishes naked, learn my lines naked, walk around my house naked."
Have you ever been to a strip club?
"I used to go. There are incredible dancers there, and if it's in a classy way...I appreciated a woman's body when I was there."
"Everybody should do this, in their home, hopefully with their significant other. If you can feel good in your own skin, why hide it?"
Beharie, 30, has experience being physical onscreen, whether in bed with Michael Fassbender in Shame or "fighting demons in the woods" in Sleepy Hollow. As for the latter: "It requires athleticism. As a woman, it's good to be able to handle your own shit."
How do you stay in shape for Sleepy Hollow ?
"I run; I do a lot of dance classes; I swim; I really love lifting weights. I'll make myself do something every day, even when my heart's not in it."
What was the best part of the shoot?
"I just turned 30, and I was really nervous [about posing].... But I wanted to celebrate and accept my body in an artistic way."
"I love my bum. I have a good bum."
In a reflection of how cultures affect attitudes toward nudity, Holt, 42, jumped at the chance to pose nude. "I'm French, so I'm quite comfortable being nude," says the actress and former model, who stars in Terminator Genisys, out in July.
"You want to have tension in your body. It helps show the muscles and makes things look nice."
What part of your body did you want to highlight?
"I'm very long, so we wanted to take advantage of that—my long legs."
Did exercising for Terminator Genisys change your body?
"Sometimes when you finish a role, you want to undo what just happened. Terminator was very stunty, so I did weight training for my back, but I sort of abandoned that and went back to Pilates."
Ask Jenna Dewan Tatum about nudity and she'll tell about her first—and second and third—trip to a strip club with, of all people, Janet Jackson. "I danced with Janet Jackson, and we toured around the world. I don't know what it was, but she just really liked going to strip clubs," she says. "She's probably like, 'Thanks, Jenna, for telling the world I go to strip clubs.'" Past experiences with nudity aside, stripping down for Allure less than a year after having a baby presented its own set of challenges for the 33-year-old star of Witches of East End. "I hope I worked out just enough," she says. As for her husband, Channing Tatum, "Chan was really on board with it—he knows I'm very comfortable in my own skin."
What surprised you about the shoot? "It's really funny, the direction you get when you're doing this photo shoot. It's like, 'Show more side boob. Oh, can you relax your fingers while you're covering your nipple?'" she says. "And don't show the cooch. These are words I will never hear again."
How often are you nude? "I'm on the 'a lot' side of the scale."
What shaped your attitude on nudity? "You sort of lose all modesty as a dancer. I also think it's just the way I came out. I've always been free-spirited, and it was hard to keep clothes on me as a kid."
Anything embarrassing? "I was doing a dance recital. I'll never forget it was to Marky Mark's "Good Vibrations." I did a shimmy, and the neck [of my costume] broke off. I flashed the whole damn audience!"
What's your workout these days? "My trainer, Jen Johnson, is amazing, but she kicks my butt. She makes me do these plank exercises. I hate them. They're awful. But they work."
Kristen Bell is candid about her body: "My belly skin has made me self-conscious, and it's only gotten worse since I've had a baby," says the 33-year-old actress ( House of Lies, Veronica Mars ). "I have definitely and happily used a body double. It's a very nice thing to be able to rely on." So why pose nude for Allure less than a year after having her baby? "I talk a big game about being comfortable no matter my size," she says. "I wanted to put my money where my mouth was."
What's your favorite body part? "I'm a big fan of buns. Buns and cakes. On anybody. Not just my own. I mean, I'm a fan of my own buns. I'm very happy with the amount that I've been given, and I often attempt to sculpt them into something more than what I've been given. But I notice other people's buns quite a bit."
Were you comfortable with your body while you were pregnant? "I was terribly frightened that I would feel like a schlub and not at all beautiful. But I've never been so comfortable with my body. When I looked in the mirror, I saw Cindy Crawford."
How did you exercise after your daughter was born? "I started doing Pilates, then I realized it wasn't as torturous as regular cardio, so I've kept it up. I'm more in shape now than I've been at other times in my life."
If there's one person you don't want to see these pictures, who is it? "I'm not concerned with anyone. I hope it's not misinterpreted, but that's too big of a problem for me to actually think about."
"I never could have done this when I was 25—no way," says Minnie Driver. "All I saw then were the flaws. I still see the flaws, but I see what's great more—and I've got a banging body." The 44-year-old actress ( Return to Zero, About a Boy ) credits a mixture of ballet and cardio barre. As for the prep for her Allure shoot? "I juiced significantly. I got a wax. You want to be neat and tidy in front of people you don't know when you're naked, I think—but I'm British."
Have you ever had a body double? "I had a body double once [in The Governess ]. She had an enormous bottom!"
Have you posed nude before? "Yes, for Karl Lagerfeld. It was a thousand times more intimidating—maybe because it was in Paris, and everyone was aloof."
What body part makes you most self-conscious? "My boobs do make me a little bit self-conscious, because I had a baby and things really do change. I would rather go bottomless on the beach than topless actually, as it turns out—you'll never see that, of course."
Nia Long's Allure shoot wasn't exactly easy: "Posing nude is probably the most uncomfortable thing ever, and not from a spiritual sense," says the 43-year-old actress ( The Divide, The Single Moms Club ). That's not to suggest Long is new to this—she bared all on Ebony cover while pregnant. "I'm still going naked. I can still take it off—two babies later," she says. "The point is to capture the true essence of beauty in our most comfortable state—and that is nude."
How did you prep for today's shoot? "I ran for 45 minutes this morning, and I haven't eaten a morsel. As soon as this is over, I'm grabbing a burger."
Have you ever skinny-dipped? "Oh, yes. It's kind of a thing I do on the regular."
Are there any body parts that make you self-conscious? "When you have kids, your body changes drastically. My boobs are not the same as they were before, I'm not going to lie."
Rivera wasn't nervous about the shoot. "I'm excited to see it—and it's going to be available to the world," she says.
Your character on Glee , Santana, has made you a sex symbol in the lesbian community. How does that feel?
"It's kind of cool—and it makes me feel like a badass. I get more girls than my boyfriend. They always tweet me about my booty."
You used to work as a Hooters waitress. Did you have nightmares about that uniform?
"I have nightmares about that job, period. When I was working there, I was really skinny—a lot skinnier than I am now. But I was always self-conscious."
"You can't be so hard on yourself that you're not enjoying every day."
Whether wearing a lab coat on House or a red leather jacket on Once Upon a Time , Morrison tends to show emotion, not skin. For this shoot, she wore only a swipe of red lipstick.
You've never done a nude scene. Why?
"It hasn't been a conscious choice, but they don't really come my way. Maybe this shoot will change that. I've always been an active person, and working out is part of my life."
What would surprise people about your body?
"Probably how many scars I have. I've had so many moles removed because I'm so fair-skinned."
How did you prepare for the shoot today?
"Nothing crazy or extreme, but maybe one glass of wine instead of two, fish instead of steak. And I got waxed and shaved my legs."
The Nashville actress's rule of thumb: "If nudity is for a shock factor, it takes away from what makes it beautiful."
"Sometimes I sleep naked. Everyone does sometimes, don't they? I hope."
What makes you most excited about seeing these pictures?
"My body isn't going to look like this forever. I think it's lovely to have that preservation."
"I said they could photograph my scars. This isn't a rite-of-passage thing or a risqué thing. It's about body image and making other people feel good."
Nothing could have prepared Miller ( Cougar Town ) for her first fully nude shoot—except maybe two straight weeks of SoulCycle and some carb-heavy incentive.
What will you eat now that the shoot's over?
"I'm going to Courteney [Cox]'s for dinner. I told her, 'You better have carbs.'"
Do you walk around the house naked?
"If I did, my husband would make me have sex 40 times a day. That's a true story."
Do you think Americans are more uptight about nudity?
"My mom was a model, so we'd go to our country house and all her friends would be topless, because a lot of the models were from Europe. I grew up knowing everyone has different boobs."
"My friends won't be surprised by this shoot," Henson said. "Whenever we go to the beach, I'm like, 'Is this a nude beach? Can I take my top off?'" With that kind of bravado, it's no wonder that the 41-year-old Person of Interest actress isn't afraid to parade around naked—even at her New York City home, with zero curtains on the floor-to-ceiling windows. "I know some idiot has a telescope, so I always wave," she said. "He's going to be pissed when I move."
After stripping down for a sex scene on Homeland , Baccarin, 32, wanted to take a more subtle approach to nudity for this shoot. "I didn't want it to be an overload, like 'That girl is always taking off her clothes,'" she said. "This is for the art of it. It's beautiful." And though she was raised in a household with a liberal, laid-back attitude towards the body ("I saw my mom in her underwear more than my friends saw theirs," she said), she's not quite a nudist: "I don't do any naked activities except for the obvious ones. No cooking naked. That's dangerous."
At 43, Messing's decision to pose nude came from a natural process of self-acceptance. "Once you have a child, once you pass 40, you have a different relationship with your body," she said. "I love my body in a way I never have before." And the parts she loves the most? "My shoulders, clavicle, and chest," she explains. "I started out in dance—there's something beautiful about a dancer's upper body. I love strapless dresses."
Following an indulgent two-week vacation, Bibb, 37, went on a four-day juice cleanse to get ready for her shoot. "It was an angry four days," says Bibb. "Sam [Rockwell, her boyfriend] was like, 'Thank God I'm not with you right now. You are not nice on the juice cleanse.'" Luckily, prepping her skin was an easier chore, as she stopped off at a Korean spa for a body scrub pre-shoot. "Everybody's naked there, and I don't mind," she said. "But I'm like a cat with a feather anytime I see a boob job. I can't look away."
As a teen beauty-pageant contestant, Menounos received low swimsuit scores. "I was hippy and I didn't diet for contests. And it didn't bother me," she says. The 33-year-old Extra host has a healthy attitude about her body, but that doesn't mean she's comfortable getting naked. In fact, she's so hesitant to be bare it all that she's afraid of getting pregnant because of how much she'd have to expose. "I have some serious issues here," she admitted. "But I want to get over that." She looked to this photo shoot to cure to her shyness, and it may have worked: "This was definitely challenging," she said, "but I feel so much better having done it."
Cuoco confesses, "I have not told my family about this, and I'll tell you why: Until they see the photos, they won't understand. All a mother or father hears is the word 'naked.' When I told my mom about the shoot, I left out the part about taking my clothes off." The 25-year-old star of The Big Bang Theory says of her preparation for the shoot, "My obsession is yoga, so I was already yogi-ing it every day," she says. "And I did veggies, raw food, and egg whites. So boring!" She was surprised by her own lack of shyness. "I was way more excited than I ever thought I would be. Which made me realize, I'm more comfortable in my own skin than I thought."
Tisdale brought her mother to her nude shoot. "I've always wanted to be sure my parents approve of what I do," she says. "Even with my tattoos, my mom went with me. The 'believe' tattoo is because my mom always told me to believe." The High School Musical and Hellcats actress does six workouts a week, rotating a boot-camp class, cardio, strength training, and Spinning, but disrobing was actually much less about showing off her hard-earned shape than it was about growing up. "I'm 25, almost 26, but people think of me as much younger because I look young," she says. "Being in this shoot was me saying, 'I'm not just the young girl everybody thinks I am. I'm actually a woman.'"
Before all her hit songs, Hilson worked behind the scenes as a successful songwriter. Stepping out of the background was not as effortless as Hilson, 28, now makes it look. "The transition to being in front of the camera was very, very difficult," she says. "Everyone has their idea of what you should look like. 'You need to get into the gym.' 'You need to wear less clothes.' 'Wear dresses and skirts.' 'Put a weave in.' 'Cut your hair.' 'Color your hair.' There are so many ways that others tug at you."
