Перевести · I dipped one and one cheerio in latex and attached it to the tentacle. Since latex bond very well to itself there was no need for glue. Then I covered the cheerio completely with latex and let it dry. Remember to powder latex or it will stick to itself when you curl the tentacles.

Wonderful! Thanks for yet another great tutorial.
Pretty cool so far and pretty simple to do (with how ever many years doing this stuff you've got under your belt)
Great idea using latex carpet adhesive glue. Must try. Thanks for sharing! I've become a fan of your work.
Thank you all for the kind words.
@ Dave- The carpet glue was kind of a "field expedient". I have to drive 45 minutes to a craft store to get proper modeling latex, but Home Depot is 5 minutes away. And I can use the time I would have spent driving to wander the aisles enjoying the home improvement porn.
Saving time and gas is the mother of invention.
Thanks for posting this! I am working right now to apply this technique towards a "Thing In The Moonlight" mask. Will link to a photo if all goes well.
here is a link to my finalized mask using the "Making A Tentacle" article as my starting off point:

It caused quite a stir at the Halloween party I attended, and I had a great time making it! Thanks again for the inspiration!
They look great can you move and twist them easily after they are done?
I am full of questions! I'm in the UK and would like to make 6-8 of these suckers about 4"inches wide at base X 5 feet long for a party. It's hard to see the volume of ingredients I would need for that quantity. Any idea how much of this stuff I would need or even if you could tell me the size of yours that would be lovely? Also is most non spray carpet adhesive latex based?
@ candace
For that size tentacle you're probably going to need an entire bag of polyester fiber fill, at least ten feet of plastic wrap, and a whole bottle of liquid latex adhesive. I'm not sure about the prices of the materials in the UK, but here in the US that would run about $7-$10 per tentacle.
There are a variety of liquid carpet adhesives available, but you want the kind clearly labeled as being latex based. If in doubt unscrew the top- latex adhesive absolutely reeks of the ammonia used as a solvent.
Wow, very beautiful work (and inspiration for me)! ;)
Thank you for this. Modified a $20 alien mask for my son to be Cthulhu this past Halloween, and it came out awesome. Skipped the suction cups, due to time constraints, but he was thrilled.

I can't find liquid latex carpet adhesive. Would Elmers Rubber Cement work?

Here are pictures from photobucket as well!
This has been very helpful for getting me started on my stage make-up test, as recreating Davy Jones. I'm excited to see how it goes, and I will post pics. But my one problem is you say that you need a bottle of "Liquid Latex Carpet Adhesive" where exactly could I pick this up? I would just go pick up a Carpet glue/Adhesive of some sort at Home Depot but I don't want to grab something with the wrong viscosity and such.
@ Anonymous
You should be able to find the latex carpet adhesive in the flooring section at Home Depot.
Awesome blog.. really handy easy to follow guide. Made a couple of these up last night using wire coat hangers and strips of old towelling for building up the shape, not quite as professional result as your ones but I think they'll suffice for a boozy treasure hunt prop. Added in some suckers from... http://tombanwell.blogspot.com/2009/07/tutorial-making-quick-tentacle.html
...for extra effect, looking good so far.. will post a link to them after the weekend! Thanks again
this looks great - one question do you think its waterproof? I want to make tenicles rising from a water tank you see!
Great way to do a tentacle! I'm glad you made that tutorial!
But it seems all latex-based carpet adhesive are not equal for this project... 3 days later and mine still hasn't dried the first coat yet! I guess it's a product that stays sticky...
Would you mind confirming that the one you used is not staying really sticky? From the image, I think you used something called Capitol Latex Seams Sealer #017? ( now AC17 from their website).
The one I used is Roberts 3300. It gives a very nice texture as it's more of a flowy paste, but unless someone knows a trick other than powder to stop the stickiness , stay away from it! ;)
How heavy did these come out to be? I'm looking to make a "beard" of them.
@ Kraken Ka-Nuckles
They're mostly air thanks to the fiber fill. I'd guess a single tentacle weighs a few ounces at most.
Any ideas on how I could make this with smooth skin? I'm making a Twi'lek for Halloween (like the green-skinned dancer from Return of the Jedi), so I need two tentacles for the back of my head with a more 'human' skin texture.... Please anyone reply if you have ideas.
This tutorial is great! I was looking for ideas on how to make head tentacles for a LARP costume and this is giving me a great startign point. Awesome!
I was wondering if regular liquid latex would work for this, it's what I have on hand at the moment but I can go out and get the latex adhesive if it's necessary. The liquid latex I have at the moment is the regular kind used for SFX or prosthetic makeup, is it usable?
@ Jennifer
If anything, it would be even better. I only used the adhesive because it was cheap and locally available.
Great tutorial, thanks! My first foray into liquid latex for costuming. My question is this: how can I attach the tentacles (temporarily) to a sweatshirt? DS is Venom from Spiderman fame and has a sweatshirt with rest of components of costume. Any and all suggestions MOST appreciated!
