La Clusaz buying Ecstasy
This pass, only for tourism, is undoubtedly one of the finest in the Alps at 2, m 9, ft and especially the highest Alpine pass. Riding up to its highest point the mountains seem to weigh down on you like sleeping titans and at certain points the road, which is like a rollercoaster ride with a throttle, seems to cut through a surreal lunar landscape. Doing it once is simply not enough! From the St Charles bridge on this part of the D becomes utterly awe-inspiring, a stunning run never to be forgotten! Lunar landscape's of Col de l'Iseran. South side col de l'Iseran towards Lanslebourg. The most enjoyable and longest is via Col du Galibier, but there is also the route via Lac du Mont Cenis into Italy then on to Briancon via Montgenevre. The south side into Italy is a classic break melting stepped zig-zag eventually leading to the Torino motorway left or Briancon right , the route to Briancon from here is not bad and enjoyable enough, but far better to double back, take a night around Lanslebourg and head up Col du Galibier with a fresh head. Riding the high alps you may occasionally hear a sharp screeching sound like a Japanese school girl being accosted by your grandfather. This is probably a marmot — basically a cross between a beaver and a giant guinea pig on speed. They will stand on their hind legs, give you the finger and screech to warn other marmots of danger. Read Full Post ». The towns along this route are mainly just small ski stations and very quiet in the summer months, Col des Aravis is your first pass; remember at the top to say a quick prayer to Saint Anne — The Protector of Travellers in the little chapel dedicated to her at the top of the Col des Aravis.. Clusaz is located 32 km to the east of Annecy, in the Aravis Valley, a busy ski resort in winter, a ghost town in summer. This is a beautiful stage with three great passes — Col des Aravis — meters, Col des Saisies at meters, and Cormet de Roselend meters. Like La Clusaz, the town of Saisies is a medium size ski station. There are some fantastic roads around the big mountain but for the sake of your sanity stay well clear of the Mont Blanc Tunnel!!! I went through it about 6 years ago and got stuck behind a string of trucks, by the time I got to the other side I felt dizzy and was close to puking in my helmet from the fumes. The way up has some hippy hairy hairpins, at the top the views of the lake and mountains are stunning. This route then descends down for a couple of kilometres, crosses an impressive dam, a tourist attraction in itself and rejoins the classic route for the climb up to Cormet de Roselend at around metres. Here the D becomes the D and just down the road you have the opportunity to go slightly off route again and ride up the glacial valley of Col de la Seigne to Ville Des Glaciers at the base of Mont Blanc with spectacular views of the mountain and glacial valley. I have yet to find a pass up here that I have not immensely enjoyed for one reason or another so if you take a wrong turn just go with it! Biker friendly hotels, most with bike garage along Stage 2 of the route;. I really did not want to leave, I loved the little town of Torgnon in the Aosta Valley and for me the little place I had stayed in was perfect, rustic, full of character and charm. A rather boring trip except for the pass from the French border down to Briancon which has some fantastic views and as with all good mountain roads in France there were plenty of motorbikes blasting their way up and down the pass utterly disregarding the speed limit which seems to only apply to car drivers. It is most definitely closed for the winter months and right up to the summer, but luckily for me it had been opened up a few days before. Both the road and the scenery is absolutely mind blowing. Upon reaching the summit the road plunges into another valley where again the scenery shocks the senses, the view of the Alps ahead, the deep valley far below is truly breath taking which is not hard as the air here at this height is getting a little thin. This place is known as the Casse Desert and has formed a dramatic backdrop to some key moments in the Tour de France. I had been through this pass a number of years ago, but that had been in early Autumn and there had been no snow, now in early summer the snow transforms the road into a very different riding experience and not to be forgotten. Freetown Christiania is an alternative community in Copenhagen. It started in the s by homeless people squatting in the derelict buildings. The main central zone is shops, mostly selling drug paraphernalia, cafes, and an art-gallery. The main street is called Pusher Street, for a reason — it is lined with men selling marijuana and the air was thick with weed. Some of the men were giggling or grinning which was a little disconcerting. This was a completely new experience for me as I have never seen drugs being openly sold before. We strolled down the street and through a square with more pushers. They were probably fine but I was out of my comfort zone and wanted to have a quick look and get out! It is worth mentioning that drugs are very much illegal in Denmark. The cabins ranged from shambolic-looking dwellings to beautiful wooden cabins, and peeking through the window from afar, you could see wooden floors and high designed lamps etc, just like any other home in Denmark. Some of the gardens had brand new garden fencing around to mark the territory. The community reminded me of the film Wanderlust with Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd where they moved to an alternative hippy community. That was my closest reference! Also, I was intrigued by the housing — I wonder how they decide who gets a large plot on which to build a beautiful wooden cabin, and who has to squat in a disused factory. Visiting here, so completely outside my normal world, made me realise how much I like fairness and order. Before the holiday I had read advice on safety and this was one of the areas they advise you not to go in after dark. After I have got home my colleague told me that the place is run by the mafia. Before leaving my husband wanted to go inside a building. I was apprehensive, expecting a bar or a drugs den inside. I was astonished at what we found inside — the whole building was taken up with a large half-pipe for skateboarding! As my husband said, this is the most different and interesting place we have been for a while! This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Learn how your comment data is processed.
