Approximately 1. An anti-drug campaigner in Fiji says the use of illicit drugs among children as young as 10 years old has become a serious concern for the country. Drug-Free World Fiji founder Kalesi Volatabu told public broadcaster FBC that the consumption of hard drugs such as methamphetamine and heroin had 'grown out of proportion'. Marijuana, really huge numbers of crystal meth. Heroin, inhalants, sniffing of glue,' she was quoted as saying. She told FBC it was 'distressing' to see children being exposed to the drugs and is calling for an urgent need for comprehensive strategies to combat the issue. Fiji has established a reputation as a hub of illicit drug trafficking as authorities try to grapple with transnational crimes. Police said Fiji was being used as a transit point and that the methamphetamine was destined for a foreign market. At the time, Volatabu had told RNZ Pacific Waves that the country was 'in chaos' called for 'an overhaul of our social system'. So that's first and foremost. The demand was initially the international market, whether it be New Zealand, Australia or any other country, but now we have a demand here locally,' she said. Fiji's Home Affairs Minister, Pio Tikoduadua, said in April that the country is at risk of becoming 'a nation of zombies' if they fail to deal with the issue. On Monday, police said a joint operation with the Revenue and Customs Service resulted in the seizure of consignments from British Columbia, Canada containing apparatuses that could be used for a possible clandestine lab. Acting police chief Juki Fong Chew said task forces from the Western and Eastern Divisions together with K9 capabilities intercepted the consignment at a warehouse in Nadi on 12 July. Last month, Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad launched the National Counter Narcotics Strategy , saying it was 'a significant step…to address the drug problem. The Acting Commissioner of Police says three police officers are charged with interfering with evidence, and two civilians face one count each of aiding and abetting interfering with evidence. Four people are being questioned after officers seized a carton containing 12 silver packets from a resident who received the package for importation. Jale Aukerea, 42, was among 13 people charged over two separate seizures of a total of 4. Nadi Fiji , 9 December - Pacific island countries and territories, located between two major drug markets, namely East and Southeast Asia and the Americas, have long been a target for the transit of synthetic drugs to destination markets. However, transit countries come with a risk of eventually turning into destination countries as well. This was the first regional synthetic drugs workshop for the Pacific, bringing together law enforcement, public health, and forensic experts from Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu to discuss and share information on the drug situation in their respective countries. While cannabis remains a major concern in the region, several countries reported that methamphetamine has now become their primary drug of concern, including Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. Though drug data in the region is available, it remains limited, hindering understanding of the scale of the drug problem. This includes forensic data, which is critical to understand what drugs are in the market. The emergence of synthetic drugs, other than methamphetamine, in the region highlights the need to enhance the forensic capacity of national authorities to accurately detect the presence of new illicit substances. However, our testing capacity is limited and we were unable to determine the exact nature of the substance. Welcome to the United Nations. United Nations. Site Search Search the site.
