Thread starter Lady Penelope Start date Jul 4, Register to view full-size images Join today. Lady Penelope One of some lot Ski Pass. Sep 7, 9, 35, Canberra. Yes, here we go again. Another question about likely ski destinations in Europe. Boys are advanced skiers who enjoy powder, off-piste adventures, and going hard and fast. Night life is not really important. Would it be too ambitious to manage, say, 2 different snow resorts in weeks? The cost of airfares during this time is currently pretty horrendous, and unlikely to go down any time soon. So may be early or the following year. St Anton and the Arlberg region really appeals, but Zermatt is also growing on me as an option. Thoughts and advice appreciated. Mar 25, 17, 20, Lady Penelope said:. Click to expand Just leave Australia out of the flight details to Europe. Reactions: Lady Penelope. May 12, 95, 99, 1, Les Hautes Montagnes. What are airfares like from Japan to Europe? Maybe do a switchy thing. CarveMan said:. Reactions: Gregah , elSpike and CarveMan. Yeah the thing with Meribel is if you want to ski Courchevel or Val Thorens it's pretty easy to pop across to either, VT is quite the mission from Courchevel. Re: Zermatt just look at food etc costs, whenever I ski Verbier I'm happy to buy a lift ticket but arrive with a backpack full of food bought in France! Reactions: warhol , elSpike , LaNeige and 3 others. Telemark Phat Pass the butter Ski Pass. Jun 21, 35, 47, 1, Jindabyne. For three out of the five of you I'd recommend somewhere on the Sella Ronda. For you alone I'd reccomend somewhere on the sella ronda exclusively. For the two boys what CarveMan said. But considering the number of people you'd be paying for I'd go to Cervinia rather than Zermatt. You'll save thousands while eating better food and drinking better coffee with the option to ski Zermatt on the same pass. Reactions: Gregah , dawooduck , warhol and 6 others. Might hire a car but at this stage more likely to use trains. Doable in less than 6 hours between St Anton and Zermatt, but St Anton to say Meribel is clearly more of an endurance trek. Then again, in a car …. St Anton to Meribel is a day's drive in reality, prob nice to detour and stop for lunch in Interlaken if the weather is good. I've driven from Chamonix to Kuhtai, prob around the same distance. Reactions: Lady Penelope and LaNeige. Schnaxxy Schnaxxlburger but a dream within a dream Ski Pass. Apr 2, Did Zermatt and Soelden in Austria in late January as my first European foray and don't regret it. Easy access from airports and between the two resorts via trains including the glacier express between the two I can share how to get cheap tickets for the GE via a special trick if you like. I was also looking for resorts with advanced skiing options, reliable snow and good views as well as trying to avoid the St Anton crowds and neither resort disappointed. Zermatt is on the ikon pass now isn't it? So combined with Thredbo it would become a lot more affordable. Soelden was very reasonably priced with a great lift system as well. Lift tickets were 60 euro a day, so even with insurance only just over 90AUD. Accommodation was awesome and ski in ski out and bus stop 20m from hotel door for free shuttle to At so 2nd most expensive location certainly lot cheaper options, still cheaper than anything except club onsnow in Aus. Views to Mount Blanc. Next trip won't be back there because there are so many resorts and so few years. However Meribel or Val Thorens definitely in the mix for which is likely to be a month in GB and then train to Alps to ski then a few days in Paris on way out. This trip sounds excellent, are you sure you don't need a personal, surprisingly professional, instructor for the duration? Reactions: Telemark Phat. Jacko A Local Ski Pass. May 15, 5, 11, Fly to Vienna. I always found flights into Vienna cheaper with plenty of flexibility Thai, Emerates, etc. Vienna Airport very casual. Enjoy taste of Europe eg: Vienna, Bratislava and catch train through beautiful countryside, perhaps stopping off for 24 hours at somewhere like Villach near the Slovakian border and skiing the local hill before continuing on to Bruneck where you can commence skiing the extensive Dolomite ski network, starting with a few days on the Kronplatz. The variety of towns and skiing thereafter is huge, prices are good. Engrish very well spoken. As others suggest, some time in Zermatt area Italian side of the hill. Don't hesitate to use the buses or trains though a hire car might be cheaper for 4 people as they are always very good for getting around. You will love it - oh, and you underestimate your skiing ability!!! Beerman One of Us Ski Pass. Jan 15, 4, 6, Brisvegas. The Austrians love a party, but can be surly to deal with. The Italians can apathetic but the food makes up for it. Budget hard if going to Suisse. Have fun. Reactions: Lady Penelope and Jacko Jul 27, 2, We are planning a very similar family trip in Jan Have booked the first week in Lech which gives access to the whole of the Arlberg but hopefully a bit less competition for any powder that may fall than neighbouring St Anton. All of the half board hotels were a lot more so self catering seems the way to go. Plan will be train from St Anton to Zermatt via Zurich. But to put it in perspective Zermatt still works out cheaper than staying on snow at Perisher! My first time skiing in Europe as well so cannot wait! Good luck in the planning. Aug 20, 1, 6, Vic. You could just spend your whole time in the Aosta Valley, some time at the Cervina end and some at the Aosta end. This will definitely require a car learn from my experience - trekking with skis n boots strapped to backpack through a packed winter festival was Also, the medieval town of Aosta itself is fantastic. There are just so many option, you really can't go wrong. It worked out OK Reactions: Copperhead Road , Cecret Skier , blueandwhite and 8 others. Fozzie Bear Where's my flapping ears gone Jun 2, 16, 32, In the woods. Lady Penelope Zermatt is phenomenal, but expensive anywhere in Switzerland is expensive. Can be made cheaper by staying in an apartment or having a kitchenette. Alternative is Cervinia; same mountain but from the Italian side. If you can live without the iconic Matterhorn view from your window you would save a bundle. As mentioned, anywhere on the Sella Ronda. And you don't need a car if you are walk to ski as train travel in Europe is brilliant. Schnaxxy Schnaxxlburger said:. I recall seeing one, but not sure how it got there there must be somewhere to park - expensive, no doubt an itinerary could involve that as your last stop, accessed by train from somewhere like Zurich and leaving the car behind there. Reactions: Schnaxxy Schnaxxlburger. Fozzie Bear said:. Lady Penelope when the view from your room is like this you forget about the cost. And when you are having lunch with views like this you forget about the cost. There is really nothing like Zermatt. Reactions: Igs , Gregah , willsnow and 12 others. It took me 4 days to get there. We stayed in Meribel and would stay there again in a heartbeat. Lots of great advice here certainly no wrong answers. I lived in Milan for a couple of years, I was working in the airline industry, so had LOTS of time off, drove all over the alps. Some others are terrified by Italians driving, but much like skiing as long as you are predictable and NOT stupid, driving over there is no problem. In 2 years, I never once put chains on either. Not sure if all the resorts are linked, I do recall being 2 valleys away from my car on teleskis once, and having to really hoof it back otherwise I'm not sure how I would have got to my car which was a long way by road. I loved the area and can't speak highly enough of it, including Malpensa Airport, which is well located, life in the whole region dates back to 25BC there is some amazing history, I used to occasionally ski a place called Chamois, which was only accessible via cable car, I once asked an older local there how old the town was, and she looked at me, and just said, its been here forever. Was only one of two lifts, but what an experience. Reactions: sunpeaker , Cecret Skier , Lady Penelope and 5 others. I think that cars are parked in Tasch for a fee before you get the train to Zermatt. Hmm, must look into Ikon although the Aosta pass that LaNeige mentioned also sounds worth exploring. Train is in some ways more attractive, even with having to lug ski bags and cases around: car hire for weeks seems expensive, with the less costly SUVs being manuals. While I love driving manuals normally, I'm not so sure about a gearstick on the right hand side! Then again, I could just grit my teeth and pay a bit extra. Reactions: Lady Penelope and Nidecker. Beautiful scenery, fairly large area with great village, good snow record and big bonus of 7 days free skiing if you have an epic pass! Some accommodation can be a long way from village and or lifts The internet is your friend here I love Italian food so I'm a bit biased in that respect but you can find great places to eat using say google at reasonable prices in all of these both on mountain and in the villages Most snow sure IMO would be Val D, Val Thorens, Zermatt, Solden and St Anton VAL T is probably most reliable but it is the highest village and has no trees to hide in and concesequently can suffer from white our big time e. Last season the higher snow sure resorts stuggled for snow at times and lower places in Austria had better snow We were in Wagrain then Corvara which were both pretty good but we switched our last resort to snow sure Obertauern because it was higher and had great snow Like anywhere a bit of luck required to snag powder and good snow in general All have good snow making where needed but the Dolomites which can be less snow sure has amazing snow making that virtually guarantees skiing Do some research on shool and festival holidays both local and other countries like UK etc as it can get very busy e g Wagrain was like skiing on a busy highway when we were there because it was Austrain fasching festival period and school holidays This website is really good Where to Ski And Snowboard. Without complicating things here Some people might disagree purely on the 'it's too obvious' basis, but I think it's one of the most beautiful ski resort villages in Europe. Skiing options are well known and speak for themselves. Incredibly easy to get to via bus from most surrounding cities, or 50 mins from Geneva Ap. Reactions: Lady Penelope and Sbooker. Not as huge as Zermatt and the French resorts but more than enough for a week or more exploring. Very accessible through Zurich then train and the resort is car free- access is only by train. Prices were reasonable and there is a large grocery store in town. English spoken everywhere, Aussies everywhere, Sbooker said:. Val D is the best in France in my view. Much larger and more accessible options for most skiers. Don't get me wrong, I love the place to death. Abseiling into Cosmic is a defining moment of my skiing life. But for most people there are better options. Roymond said:. Reactions: Telemark Phat and Roymond. Kenzie One of Us. Sep 23, Car free. All of Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche are both easily accessible from Plateau Rosa the international link , but most of the skiing in Zermatt not so. Lots more non-ski activities. Try otp. Plenty there for your other 3 weeks. I'd recommend Tignes-Val d'Isere still commonly referred to as Espace Killy for the off-piste for your boys. Val d'Isere is the prettier one, but Tignes has more non-ski activities a large natural ice rink, ice diving, dog sledding etc - have a look at evolution2. To be honest Ste Foy and la Rosiere are better suited to a day out from the other three, especially from Paradiski and Espace Killy - there may be a discount for a day pass or even a freebie with your liftpass and receipt from the big three. There are lots of them that go to the Tarentaise, some to all the resorts, so if you, say, fancied a week in each of 3 Valleys, Paradiski and Espace Killy this could be organised. Also look at the specialist ski travel agents - alpineanswers,co,uk and igluski. English is widely spoken in all the resorts I've mentioned. In fact in some you'd hardly hear anything else. Bear in mind that European skiing is very orientated to Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday trips. May 26, 2, 9, TQY. What a convenient time to find this thread just as I am researching Zermatt and Chamonix! Hope Lady P doesn't mind a minor threadjack here - I think it's all still relevant to her intial questions To keep it relevant from the off I'm just going to point out that the IKON pass gets you 7 days free skiing in Zermatt but my understanding is that this does not include Cervinia. So buyer beware! Our story is that we are visiting friends who are doing a season in Verbier. We are going for the last week of March, flying into Geneva. I can't bring myself to go for just a week to Europe so looking at an extra week or possibly two. We have IKON passes this year and even though lift tickets are just a small part of the overall cost of a holiday I can't help being sucked in to the free lift tickets So we have the IKON choices as below for the first week or two of April 1 Kitzbuhel - went before, loved it, but rather low on altitude for April and a bit of a trek 2 Dolimiti superski - desperately want to go but I think it's a fair trek from Verbier 3 Chamonix - I speak French and love French food, drink and skiing. But we won't have a car and although we love off piste I wonder if family holiday is better spent elsewhere this time around 4 Zermatt - seems like a good idea as we are already in die Schweiz. Has significant altitude for April skiing 5 Andorra - went once when I was at university quid all in for flights and accommodation from Glasgow. Had a brilliant time with uni mates, can't really remember anything. Might be best left in my past! So I'm pretty drawn towards Zermatt. Yes there seems to be crazy expensive acommodation but also seems to be some quite reasonable priced stuff too? Passes will cost us nothing so it's down to how much we can spend on food really. And my heathen kids pretty much only eat bread and chips How bad can it be? Bumaybe it's possible to buy an add-on one day just so we can go over there? Anyone want to convince me Chamonix is a better idea than Zermatt? Hapy to be convinced! Will be a family of four kids are good skiers with no car. Pretty village a bonus but there for the skiing really. Jul 3, Lots of great advice above. Apologies for a long reply, I just get a bit excited whenever I come back to this forum and start looking at international trip planning! For what it's worth, faced with similar choice I ended up booking Zermatt again. I was fortunate to live in Europe for 5 years and had the opportunity to ski all the resorts people have mentioned above but the two resorts we always think back on as standouts are Chamonix and Zermatt. They just have something extra special about them. You've described this trip as once in a lifetime so I think that extra something is important to you. I reckon let your boys find Chamonix in a few years time though. Even if they are sleeping together on a couch and only eating bread and cheese, make sure they have funding for a mountain guide and they will be blown away! Zermatt would be my pick for your currently proposed trip, especially because you've emphasised picturesque a few times! I think it keeps pushing to the top of your list for a reason, and in my experience it delivers on the hype when you're there in person. A factor that may make that different for me to you is ski school though - I love NA ski schools for the quality of the instructors but the cost is now eye watering. As others have said apartments often quirky for Australian expectatoins, but fine are particularly good value in Europe. And its material. But you get what you pay for! It is also part of the reason I go to Zermatt on a ski trip, especially early season. If not though, at Zermatt ski up high in the morning and filter your way down for a late lunch at one of half a dozen of the best mountain restaurants you will find anywhere. Take your time, enjoy the experience and then just ski home from there. It gives you the piece of mind that you are going to have a great holiday irrespective of conditions. Personally, I prefer the mountain hut style restaurants like Blatten and Zum See below Furi but the flashier restaurants with views on the Sunnega side are also part of the experience Again, I probably just didn't have the right info, but I just found St Anton a bit of a slog that didn't offer great options in poor conditions so see it as a high risk early season resort. Unless of course you are looking to hedge that risk by being happy partying in the great apres bars which does have some merit, but I'm too old for that now Nothing wrong with 3V and you'll have a great trip there too. That was the first resort I took my family back to for European skiing when I had the choice. We also stayed at Meribel. UK style catered chalet. They are great family ski holidays and VERY easy on the parents, though you might be past the difficulties I have on ski trips with younger kids. Suspect you and daughter might enjoy the skiing there most of the three options you suggested. Your boys are just going to have a ball skiing wherever they are so I wouldn't worry about them on that front! Like all amateur ski resort opinions, no doubt heavily skewed by the luck of the weather for a sample size of 1 so take with a grain of salt and to be fair, you can find similar experience to what I've described at Zermatt at most of the other resorts listed by the folks above so you really can't go wrong booking a European ski trip, especially if you haven't been before. It's just degrees of 'right'! Reactions: cold wombat , teebee , Lady Penelope and 7 others. Reactions: LMB and blueandwhite. Kenzie said:. Cecret Skier said:.
