Kevin Hassett Warns of Economic Slowdown Amid Rising Inflation

Former White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett has issued a stark warning about the U.S. economy, predicting a potential slowdown in growth as inflation remains stubbornly high. In a speech at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he is a distinguished visiting fellow, Hassett cautioned that the Federal Reserve’s aggressive interest rate hikes may not be enough to curb rising prices without triggering a recession.

'While the Fed has taken necessary steps to combat inflation, the lag effects of monetary policy could hit the economy harder than expected,' Hassett said. 'We're seeing signs of weakening consumer demand, and if job growth stalls, we could be looking at a significant downturn in the second half of the year.'

Hassett, who served as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Donald Trump, pointed to recent data showing sluggish retail sales and declining business investment as early indicators of trouble. He also criticized the Biden administration’s fiscal policies, arguing that excessive government spending has exacerbated inflationary pressures.

Other economists have offered mixed reactions to Hassett’s forecast. Some, like Harvard’s Jason Furman, agree that risks are mounting, while others believe the labor market remains strong enough to avoid a major contraction.

As policymakers debate the next steps, Hassett urged a balanced approach: 'The Fed needs to stay the course on inflation, but Congress must also rein in deficits to avoid prolonging the pain for American families.'

With midterm elections approaching, economic concerns are expected to dominate the political landscape, putting figures like Hassett back in the spotlight as key voices in the debate over the nation’s financial future.
