Kentucky Devastated by Deadly Floods: State of Emergency Declared

Frankfort, KY – June 12, 2024 – Catastrophic flooding has ravaged large portions of Kentucky, leaving at least a dozen dead, hundreds displaced, and entire communities underwater after days of relentless rainfall. Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency, calling the disaster 'one of the worst flooding events in recent memory.'

Widespread Destruction

Torrential downpours over the past 72 hours have caused rivers and creeks to overflow, swallowing homes, roads, and bridges across eastern and central Kentucky. Rescue teams in helicopters and boats have been deployed to evacuate stranded residents, with emergency responders working around the clock to reach those trapped in isolated areas.

Among the hardest-hit regions are Breathitt, Perry, and Knott counties, where floodwaters have submerged entire neighborhoods. Dramatic footage shows cars floating down streets, buildings collapsing, and families being airlifted to safety.

Casualties and Missing Persons

At least 12 fatalities have been confirmed, with officials warning that the death toll could rise as search-and-rescue efforts continue. Dozens more remain missing, and local hospitals are overwhelmed with injuries ranging from hypothermia to trauma.

Governor Beshear, visibly emotional during a press conference, urged residents to avoid travel and heed evacuation orders. 'This is a heartbreaking situation. We’ve lost neighbors, friends, and family members, and our focus right now is on saving lives,' he said.

Federal Aid Requested

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the disaster and pledged federal support, with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) teams en route to assist. The National Guard has also been activated to help with evacuations and supply distribution.

Meanwhile, power outages affect over 50,000 households, and clean drinking water is in short supply as treatment plants struggle with flood damage. Shelters have been set up in schools and community centers, but many evacuees face a long road to recovery.

Climate Concerns Rise

Experts warn that extreme weather events like this are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Kentucky, still recovering from historic floods in 2022, now faces another devastating blow.

For now, residents brace for more rain as another storm system approaches, threatening to worsen the crisis.
