Kentucky Derby 2025: 'Golden Thunder' Stuns Crowd with Record-Breaking Victory

Louisville, KY — May 3, 2025

In a heart-pounding finish that will go down in Derby history, Golden Thunder, a striking chestnut colt with a blistering late kick, surged past the competition to win the 151st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher and ridden by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., the 3-year-old phenom shattered the track record with a time of 1:59.12, becoming the fastest Derby winner in history.

The race was a nail-biter from the start, with early leader Midnight Mirage setting a blistering pace. But as the field turned for home, Golden Thunder unleashed an explosive rally, weaving through traffic before overtaking Midnight Mirage and Coastal Cruiser in the final furlong. The crowd of 165,000 erupted as the colt crossed the finish line by a length and a half.

'I've never felt a horse with this much heart,' Ortiz said in a post-race interview, still breathless from the victory. 'When he found his stride, I knew we had something special.'

The win marks Pletcher’s fourth Derby victory and cements Ortiz’s status as one of the sport’s premier jockeys. Golden Thunder, owned by the famed WinStar Farm, now sets his sights on the Preakness Stakes, with Triple Crown hopes alive and well.

In a dramatic twist, second-place finisher Midnight Mirage was later disqualified for interference, elevating Coastal Cruiser to second and longshot Bluegrass Bandit to third.

As the sun set over Churchill Downs, the 2025 Derby proved once again why it’s the 'Greatest Two Minutes in Sports.'
