Kaitlyn Chen Drafts First in Ivy League History

Princeton Star Kaitlyn Chen Makes History as First Ivy League Player Drafted in WNBA First Round

Princeton, NJ — June 10, 2025 — In a groundbreaking moment for Ivy League basketball, Princeton Tigers’ standout guard Kaitlyn Chen was selected 8th overall by the Chicago Sky in the 2025 WNBA Draft, becoming the first player from an Ivy League school to be taken in the first round.

Chen, a 5'9' dynamo from San Marino, California, leaves Princeton as one of the most decorated players in program history. Over her four-year career, she averaged 18.4 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game, leading the Tigers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including a historic Sweet 16 run in 2024.

'Kaitlyn is a generational talent who changes the game with her speed, court vision, and clutch shooting,' said Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. 'She’s proven she can compete with anyone, and we’re thrilled to bring her leadership and skill to our team.'

Chen’s selection marks a major milestone for Ivy League athletics, long overlooked in high-profile drafts due to the conference’s academic rigor and lack of athletic scholarships. 'This is for every kid who’s been told they have to choose between elite academics and elite basketball,' Chen said in an emotional post-draft interview. 'You don’t.'

With training camp set to begin next month, Chen will join a Sky roster looking to reclaim its place atop the WNBA. Meanwhile, Princeton fans are already calling for her jersey to be retired—proof that her legacy is just beginning.
