Jonathan Groff Earns Tony Award Nomination for Lead Role in 'Merrily We Roll Along' Revival

New York, NY — Jonathan Groff has secured a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his standout performance as Franklin Shepard in the critically acclaimed Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along. The Stephen Sondheim classic, which originally struggled in its 1981 debut, has been hailed as a triumph in its latest iteration, thanks in large part to Groff’s magnetic performance.

Groff, known for his roles in Hamilton, Spring Awakening, and Mindhunter, has long been a favorite among theater fans. His portrayal of the disillusioned composer Shepard has earned widespread praise, with The New York Times calling it 'a career-defining performance, brimming with charm and emotional depth.'

The Merrily revival, directed by Maria Friedman, also stars Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez, both of whom received Tony nominations in the Featured Actor/Actress categories. The production itself is up for Best Revival of a Musical.

In an interview with Playbill, Groff expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying, 'Getting to sing Sondheim’s music every night is a dream, and to share this experience with such an incredible cast is beyond anything I could have imagined.'

Groff previously earned a Tony nomination for Spring Awakening in 2007. This year’s Tony Awards will air on June 11, where he will compete against The Notebook’s Dorian Harewood and The Outsiders’ Brody Grant, among others.

Fans and critics alike are eagerly awaiting the ceremony, with many predicting Groff could take home his first Tony. Whether he wins or not, one thing is clear: Jonathan Groff’s star continues to rise on Broadway and beyond.
