The Last of Us - Mini Story: Episode 3
'The Weight of Mercy'

Setting: A crumbling highway overpass, years after the Cordyceps outbreak. The sky is gray, and the wind carries the scent of rain and rust.

Joel and Ellie trek carefully, avoiding infected nests and scavenger patrols. Ellie spots a faded sign: 'Pittsburgh – 10 Miles.'

Ellie: 'Pittsburgh? Isn’t that where you and Tess…?'
Joel: (gruffly) 'Yeah. Not going back there.'*

Before they can reroute, a voice rings out.

Voice: 'Drop your bags. Slowly.'

A teenage girl, Lena, steps from the shadows, a rifle trembling in her hands. Behind her, a younger boy, Ben, clutches a knife.

Ellie: 'Whoa, easy! We’re not looking for trouble.'
Lena: 'Everyone says that. Then they take what’s ours.'

Joel eyes their malnourished frames. 'You two alone?'

Ben nods, but Lena snaps, 'Doesn’t matter.'

Ellie lowers her weapon. 'We’ve got food. We’ll share.'

Joel tenses but doesn’t stop her.

As they eat, Lena reveals their group was ambushed by raiders. 'They killed my dad… left us.'

Ellie’s fists clench. 'We know how that feels.'

Joel checks his ammo. 'You got a plan?'
Lena: 'Find the Fireflies. Heard they’re west.'

Ellie and Joel exchange a look.

Ellie: 'We’re heading that way. Stick with us—just till the next safe zone.'

Joel hesitates, but nods. 'Stay sharp.'

As they set off, Ben tugs Ellie’s sleeve. 'You’re not like the others.'

Ellie smirks. 'Damn right.'

But shadows move in the distance. Raiders—or worse.
