Jasmine Paolini Stuns World No. 1 to Claim Maiden WTA 1000 Title in Madrid

Madrid, Spain – May 12, 2025

In a thrilling final that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini pulled off the biggest win of her career, defeating World No. 1 Iga Świątek in a dramatic three-set battle to claim the Madrid Open title. The 29-year-old, known for her tenacity and fiery baseline game, triumphed 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted over two and a half hours.

Paolini, who entered the tournament ranked No. 15, had never before reached a WTA 1000 final. But this week, she played the tennis of her life, taking down former Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff en route to the championship match. Against Świątek, she weathered a slow start, fighting back from a set down and saving three break points in the decisive third set before sealing the victory with a blistering forehand winner.

'I still can't believe it,' an emotional Paolini said during the trophy ceremony. 'Iga is such a tough opponent, and I just kept fighting for every point. This is a dream come true for me.'

The victory makes Paolini the first Italian woman to win a WTA 1000 event on clay since Sara Errani in 2012. It also propels her into the Top 10 for the first time, cementing her status as one of the sport’s most improved players.

With Roland Garros just weeks away, Paolini’s stunning run in Madrid has sent a clear message: she is a serious contender for Grand Slam glory.
