The desire to curb human passions and the approval for power over the most deep-seated motivations, lead to the creation of some of the most sophisticated and intricate devices of torture known to man. So there now exist anti-masturbatory rings and chastity belts.
The earliest instance of the female chastity belt was discovered in Austria by the famous archaeologist Anthony Pechindzerom and belongs to the XVI century. These tools were very popular among knights, those going into campaigns and too conscious of the loyalty of their spouses. They chained wives up and took the key away with them. Although one is able to defecate in them, they make hygiene almost impossible. Over time, the model’s measurements were improved, and the creation of locks was engaged in by jewelers. Keys were produced as a single copy, and picks to them could not be created. In addition, anyone returning from distant lands could see how many times his missus tried to escape from her ‘captivity’ which a device modified to “pinch off” a piece of the material it was protecting, every time someone tried to open it without the key.
A century later in Victorian England, a similar device with rings was invented for males which were worn to wean young boys away from masturbating. In those days it was customary to assume that masturbating lead to blindness, insanity, sudden death, and other dire consequences. However, loss of men especially the young, to sex or masturbation – this is a real torture for such behavior. These devices were made of metal, sometimes supplied with studs, and most were just very tight and prevented full erections.
But among the intimate forms there existed even more terrible devices. For example, pears and wooden phalluses. They were often used in conjunction with the interrogation of witches and heretics. Both instruments were designed to break the most sensitive of organs. Using the pear as punishment was considered more severe, since before it is applied it is heated, then injected into the mouth, anus, or vagina. When the screw tightened, the pear segments were released to allow for maximum carnage. Victims of this device could very quickly die from blood loss and painful shock.
An interesting fact: The chastity belt was considered to be leather straps, which in Ancient Rome, were used by slaves in trying to prevent pregnancy. Later, their purpose and type were transformed into their iron counterpart.
One of the main factors that drives a human being — that is the instinct to procreate, and the pleasures involved. The people who first realized this simple truth began utilizing it for the complete manipulation others. For this, many sophisticated devices have been contrived.
The husband of one beautiful girl, leaving for the far reaches of the land, safeguards his relationship from adultery. He’s asked a blacksmith to forge for her innovative underwear made from strong iron. For these next few months she won’t be able to sit nor move normally. The “chastity belt” rubs against her hips and crotch, limiting not only her sexual instinct, but also her unwashed body’s access to water.
Young boys born into religious families often suffer nightly from pain derived from the pressure applied to their sexual organs by protective caps made from metal rings, or splints.
The second type of device is used to mock actions of sexual nature, and for the aggravation of said mockery into truly monstrous forms.
A woman suspected of witchcraft is tightly bound, stripped of all her clothes, and stretched across and torture table in an obscene position. Executors take hold of wooden, oblong objects, not always anatomical in shape, and mimic sexual penetration. They do this in such a rough a manner that the unlucky sufferer experiences horrible pain and burning sensations. Gradually, the torturers gets her to bleed, as well as recognize all her sins upon this Earth.
A separate example of cruelty and inhumanity takes the form of a mechanical “pear”. It’s introduced into the natural cavities, the same way in both men and women. Already in and of itself it causes terrible torment. Then the executioner turns a screw, and “petals” unfold, tearing off bodily tissue inside the subject. After such torture, mercy means a quick death, as the victim will no longer be able to walk, nor adequately perceive their reality.

I have always associated bamboos with pandas in a very cute and adorable way. I mean come on, look at this guy. So much stealth.
But then I read about Bamboo Torture. Before anything else, one should realise the power of growing bamboo. A bamboo can grow immensely fast. We are talking multiple feet in a single day.
And it is strong. Like really strong. Here's some bamboo growing out of the asphalt. It pierced the f***ing concrete!
Now, I'll get straight into it (much like the technique).
It is said that this technique was employed by the Japanese during World War II on prisoners of war. Apparently, US officers who survived the POW camps later recounted the method of torture.
Although this theory has not been confirmed yet, there is a huge possibility that it may have really been used.
What did they really do in bamboo torture?
They would basically tie down a soldier horizontally, facing upward, over growing bamboo shoots.
The sharpened shoots would then start growing and impale the back of the person. Slowly, and very much painfully so, it would start piercing through the body and finally come out the other side. Eventually, there would be multiple shoots coming out of different parts of the body.
Death would be inevitable but slow, making it all the more painful. It was like falling on a bed of nails.
But did it ever happen? Or was it just a myth?
Well, the Mythbusters, who are popular for testing hypotheses and theories that were once believed to be true, decided to test this too.
They made a torso using ballistic gelatin, a material which requires the same amount of pressure to puncture as the human skin. Initially, they had kept it over the bamboo in a greenhouse. But the heat from the sun melted the gel and the bamboo got poisoned and couldn't grow after the initial penetration.
They then put everything on the roof and modified the torso. The bamboo grew right through and reached over 10 feet. Yup, that high. So they too deemed the torture technique very much plausible.
Apart from them, like I said, soldiers too have reported finding mutilated bodies of Allied soldiers that seemed to have been through the same type of torture.
I don't know if this was just a method of teaching other POWs to behave or if it was a way of extracting information. But this has got to be one of the most horrific ways to die. That too after you have seen the spoils of war.
The Japanese soldiers, because of the corporal punishment given to their own soldiers for minor acts of discipline infringement, became harsh to their prisoners.
Never thought bamboo could be used for something so horrific.

While today we use boring methods of execution so as to preserve the humanity of both the executioner and the executed, back in the day they really didn’t give a shit about the people they punished. In fact, humiliation and suffering were important aspects of torture and execution, and no one did this better than the ancient Chinese. They were highly creative and seriously sadistic in their methods, and liked to do things slow and steady, often prolonging death for days. Below are some of the methods used in ancient China to torture and execute prisoners:
Also known as “slow slicing” or “death by a thousand cuts,” Lingchi involved the removal by knife of flesh from the body in small pieces and small, non-deadly cuts to limbs and torso. After chunks of flesh had been removed from all of the limbs, they were amputated from the living torso. The executioner made sure not to bleed the victim too much in order to prolong death until the final cuts to the throat or heart were made. Lingchi was brutal and slow, and a punishment that carried on into the afterlife, where it was said that a person killed by lingchi would not be whole after death. According to Sir Henry Norman in his book The People and Politics of the Far East , the executioner sliced off pieces by “grasping handfuls from the fleshy parts of the body, such as the thighs and the breasts…then the limbs are cut off piecemeal at the wrists and the ankles, the elbows and knees, the shoulders and hip. Finally the victim is stabbed in the heart and his head cut off.” Lingchi was one of those brutal torture methods that were photographed in the 1800s with the advent of the camera, so there are a lot of scary photos of this one!

Flaying, or the removal of skin from the face or body of a person, was practiced all over the ancient world, but the Chinese were very fond of it. Customarily, it was done with a sharp knife, carefully slicing into the dermis and removing the skin of the face in one piece. Many Chinese emperors and empresses loved flaying their detractors, The Hongwu Emperor in particular – he ordered the flaying of 5000 women in 1396. The skins were either stuffed with straw or nailed to a wall to show off to any potential enemies of the state. I also found a particularly gruesome story about flaying with mercury, whereby the victim would be buried upright to the neck, and have two cuts made in the scalp and mercury poured into them. The weight of the mercury would cause the skin to separate from the flesh, and when the victim writhed in pain they would slip from their skin like a banana from the peel. I couldn’t find anything to back this up, but it sounds awesomely fucking sadistic!!!
Bamboo grows at an insane rate, sometimes feet per day, so the Chinese took advantage of this by using it to slowly kill prisoners in an excruciatingly painful way. The prisoner would be suspended above shoots of living bamboo that had been sharpened to a point. As the bamboo grew, it would slowly pierce the victim’s flesh and grow into their bodies to pierce their organs. Nobody had to get their hands dirty, the bamboo did all the work. I can’t imagine the terrifying feeling of the bamboo pressing into my flesh, knowing that it would inevitably enter my body.
According to the Chinese historical documents known as the Twenty-Four Histories , a woman who was convicted of conspiring to kill her husband with her lover was often punished with a device known as a wooden horse. This was basically just a sharpened wooden stake that she was hung above, with the tip in her vagina, and then she was cut down, allowing the stake to enter her body and pierce through it until it came out the top. Holy fucking hell that is disgusting!!!
As well as creative torture and execution methods, some Chinese emperors were especially brutal when it came to whom suffered at their hands. The Nine Familial Exterminations is a good example – when a person was condemned for crimes like treason, the emperor may also choose to punish eight other levels of their family, which meant their children, parents, grandparents, siblings, siblings in-law, parents in-law, aunts and uncles, often by a method like lingchi. In one case, that of Fang Xiaoru, a scholar in the Ming Dynasty who refused to write the inaugural address for the incoming emperor, he asked that ten levels be executed, so the emperor also included his students, and executed a total of 873 people.
