The Japanese birthrate continues drop to record lows. Is it because the nation's youth are wrapped up in video games?
A recent study carried out by famed sex researcher Kunio Kitamura reveals that 1 in 3 young males between the ages of 16 and 19 are "not interested in sex", either stated that they "hate" it or were simply not concerned with it. (What's more, nearly sixty percent of girls said they weren't interested.) The survey polled 2,693 Japanese men and women between the ages of 16 and 49. Shock!
The nation of Japan's declining birthrate is all due to young males who are not interested in making whoopee. Right? Not so fast. The Japanese media (and, in turn, the international media) continues to latch on to the notion of herbivore men — "grass eaters" who are simply not into girls. This is the future of the country, and the future looks like...a bunch of pansies.
In the past, it's been stated that young men were simply more interested in video game heroines than real girls, because game girls won't break their hearts.
"The results support the herbivorification of young men," Kitamura is quoted as saying about the survey. This year's results shows a increase in the last of sexual interest from previous years.
Active Noise Canceling You’ll find the call quality is enhanced as the four built-in microphones are used to suppress any ambient noise and amplify your voice those on your call only hear what you intend for them to hear. With the charging case, you’ll get up to 30 hours of listening time and if you’re ever caught with a dead battery, just five minutes of charging will get you an hour of use.
But wait a minute — out of the 2,693 surveyed, only 57 percent actually replied. That's somewhat odd, no? And without seeing (and taking) the actual survey itself, it's difficult to discern the methodology. What's more, Japanese teenagers might be more reluctant to reveal their true feelings in a survey due to embarrassment. Surveys can be written to produce any kind of data, so they're best taken with a grain of salt.
What's more, this line of questions can be considered loaded: If Japanese teens say they are interested in sex, then the country's pop culture is making them all horndogs. If Japanese teens say they are not interested in sex, then they are figuratively castrated and escaping into that same pop culture.
Japanese teens may not be interested in sex — then again, they're probably like teens everywhere on earth. Balls of emotion, trying to figure themselves out and connect with others.
"Obviously, the most important reason for Japan's declining birth rate is that people are not having sex," Kitamura, head of the Japan Family told The Daily Telegraph.
"Combined with the rising number of elderly people, this population imbalance is a major problem," he said.
Oh, Japanese are having sex, but it's a little naive of Kitamura to assume that they are only having sex with their marriage partners. Japan is clearly interested in sex; a quick look at its nightlife and low culture will clue one in pretty quick. The commenters on 2ch., Japan's largest web forum, wonder if those polled are interested in things like masturbation.
The birthrate in Japan is declining, leaving a big question mark on the country's future. This didn't begin when young males started reading comics or playing video games, but with the breakdown of the traditional family structure in the years after World War II, which meant that grandparents not longer lived with their children, putting an increasing burden on new mothers. The tradition of hiring a babysitter from outside the family doesn't exist to the same extent that it does in the West, meaning more pressure and responsibility on working mothers (and fathers).
But it's not just Japan, birthrates are dropping in South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. Heck, even Italy, the population is declining — and the stereotype of Italian men is hardly that of a bunch of grass eaters. Economics have a hand in this as does the society at large.
These days, working parents even have often difficulty getting their children into already overcrowded day care, while many Japanese corporate environments are not exactly hospitable for young women who plan to have children. But those reasons for a declining birthrate are more complex — and sadly, difficult to change. The sexual interest of teenage males is far easier to finger.
Culture Smash is a daily dose of things topical, interesting and sometimes even awesome — game related and beyond.

Under article 177 of the Japanese Penal Code, it is an offense for any person to engage in sexual intercourse with a female partner aged less than 13 years. The crime is known as statutory rape, and it attracts a penalty of imprisonment with labor for no less than three years. The law also prescribes a similar punishment for a person found guilty of sexually assaulting, intimidating, or forcibly committing sexual intercourse against a female aged either 13 years or older. However, in spite of the consensual age in Japan being thirteen years at the national level, each of the country’s prefectures and municipalities has independent laws on the age at which young people can consent to sexual activity.
Article 176 of the Japanese Penal Code prohibits acts of indecency against males or females who are below 13 years of age. It also says that a person who forces any person aged thirteen years or more to commit an indecent act by the use of intimidation or assault is liable for imprisonment with work for a period ranging from six months to ten years. Under article 178, it is a crime to induce inability to resist or unconsciousness on a person to engage in sexual acts with them. The same applies to committing indecent acts upon an unconscious male or female.
Japan’s Child Welfare Act defines a child as anyone below the age of 18 years. Article 34 of the Act forbids any person from causing a child to commit obscene acts. It also stipulates that it is illegal for an employer to send a child aged below 15 years to sell wares in stores that carry out sex-related businesses or in buildings where dating agencies are situated. The Act also bars females below the age of 16 years and males of less than 18 years from getting married without parental consent.
Most of the prefectures in the country have obscenity statutes or laws against corruption of minors. The age of consent in the prefectures ranges from 16 to 18 years, and it is illegal to engage in sexual activities with partners who are below this age unless a parent approves of the romantic relationship. In Tokyo, for example, a person has to be at least 18 years to agree to have any form of sexual relations. In both of Japan’s territories, Okinotori Islands and Marcus Islands, the local age of consent is 13 years.
The age of consent in Japan has no close in age exceptions. Partners who engage in sexual relations with persons aged less than 13 years can be prosecuted for statutory rape in spite of the age difference, even if the younger partner consented. The absence of close in age exemptions also means that there is no legal protection for two individuals who willingly give in to intimate relations when they are under 13 years of age.

So-called 'idol' singers, some of whom are aged as young as six, perform in full make-up in front of sleazy male fans
A SIX-year-old girl dances on stage in front of dozens of cheering middle-aged men in a sleazy Tokyo club.
Decked out in make-up with ribbons in her hair, Ai is dressed like an adult, but still looks very much a child.
She is a so-called "idol" singer - common in Japan, where rights groups have complained that society's sometimes permissive view of the sexualisation of young girls puts minors at risk.
It was only in 2015 that possessing child abuse images was criminalised and authorities are struggling to bring the country into line with other advanced nations on the issue.
In the crowd at an idols show, Soichiro Seki, 40, says he watches young girls on stage twice a week.
He insists he goes just to encourage the performers and feels no shame.
But he did concede that other fans objectify them.
"(For them) coming to a concert like this and visiting a hostess club in Kabukicho are essentially the same thing," he said, referring to Tokyo's major red-light district.
Idol Tama Himeno, who has performed on stage since the age of 16, says the men attending her shows worship the performers and crave communication with young girls that they cannot get elsewhere.
Most fans are "pure," insists Himeno, now 24, although she admits she was once offered £184 for her used pantyhose.
"Men idolising young girls is relatively accepted in Japan," said Himeno, citing the Tale of Genji, an 11th-century classic depicting a nobleman's romantic relationships with women, as well as a small girl.
For Ai's manager Hidenori Okuma, the men are attracted by the thought of contact with a "girl next door".
"Meeting and chatting with high-school idols has become so popular," said Okuma.
"It's now less embarrassing to admit you like young girls. Now they (male fans) say they prefer primary school girls, without hesitation."
Ai's mother, Mami Yamazaki, says her daughter has wanted to be an idol singer since she watched an anime cartoon about young girls striving for stardom.
“In magazines, children are modelling clothes. What Ai is doing is not much different," she says, despite the audience for idol shows being mainly adult males.
Yamazaki, 26, herself played in a band as a teenager and sees her daughter's performances as a way into the popular and lucrative world of idols.
It can be a pathway to fame, as demonstrated by Japan's AKB48 band, one of the country’s most successful acts, who started in a small stage in Tokyo's Akihabara, with the youngest member aged 11.
But getting a foothold into the idol scene means the child has to interact with adult fans, taking photos together and autographing the backs of their t-shirts.
"It must be a bizarre sight" for foreigners, admits Himeno but she stresses any sexual advances are an absolute "no-no."
Japan's battle against paedophilia is well documented.
The number of minors abused in indecent images has risen five-fold in the past decade, according to official figures.
Police have failed to stamp out so-called JK – meaning Joshi Kosei, or high school girls - businesses, which offer men services like going for a walk with a teen girl so the customers can negotiate for sex.
Quasi-pornographic "chaku-ero", or clothed eroticism - images of small children posing in tiny swimsuits - are easily found on the Internet, slipping through a legal loophole.
Lawyer Keiji Goto, who campaigns for minors' rights, says the problem is a social one.
Many Japanese think that sexually objectifying young girls is not taboo but rather "just falls into a grey zone," said Goto.
Psychiatrist Hiroki Fukui, who also treats paedophiles, says the awareness in Japan that children need to be protected from potential sexual predators is "so low."
He explained: "We need to realise this situation in Japan is not normal."

TOKYO (Reuters Life!) - Teens who skip breakfast as middle school students tend to have sex at an earlier age than those who start the day with a proper meal, a government-backed Japanese medical researcher said on Friday.
The link between breakfast and sex probably lies in the teens’ family life, said Kunio Kitamura, executive director of the Japan Family Planning Association, who conducted the survey.
The survey examined sexual experiences as well as family relationships and lifestyle habits of Japanese females and males aged 16 to 49. It was carried out in September and was based on about 1,500 people.
The average age of first-time sex for those who said they ate breakfast every day as a middle school student was 19.4, while for those who skipped breakfast, the average age was 17.5.
“The fact that people can’t eat breakfast may show something about their family environment,” said Kitamura. “Before blaming individuals for having sex at an early age, it may be necessary to look into the sort of homes they are from.”
The survey, intended to study how to reduce unwanted pregnancies, also showed the average age of first-time sex was lower for those who found their mother annoying.
People who said they disliked their mother had sex for the first time at the average age of 16, while the average age for those who appreciated their mother was 19, Kitamura said.
