Jake's Journey into March Madness

Mini Story: When Does March Madness Start?

It was a chilly February evening, and Jake was scrolling through his phone, trying to figure out his plans for March. His friends had been buzzing about 'March Madness,' but Jake had no idea what it was or when it started. All he knew was that it had something to do with basketball.

'Hey, Sarah,' Jake called out to his roommate, who was lounging on the couch with a bowl of popcorn. 'When does March Madness start?'

Sarah looked up, her eyes wide with mock horror. 'You don't know? Jake, it's only the most exciting time of the year! March Madness starts in mid-March, usually around the second week. The Selection Sunday is on March 17th this year, and the first games kick off a couple of days later.'

Jake frowned. 'Selection Sunday? What's that?'

Sarah sighed dramatically. 'That's when the NCAA announces the teams that made it to the tournament. It's like Christmas for basketball fans. You get to see who's playing who, and then the madness begins!'

Jake nodded slowly, starting to get it. 'So, it's a big basketball tournament?'

'Exactly!' Sarah exclaimed. '68 teams, single-elimination, and anything can happen. That's why they call it madness. There are upsets, buzzer-beaters, and Cinderella stories. It's insane!'

Jake grinned. 'Alright, I'm in. When do we start watching?'

Sarah tossed a piece of popcorn at him. 'We start on Selection Sunday, obviously. But you better do your homework before then. Pick a team, learn the players, and get ready to fill out a bracket.'

'A bracket?' Jake asked, feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Sarah laughed. 'Don't worry, I'll help you. But trust me, once you experience March Madness, you'll be hooked.'

As the weeks went by, Jake found himself getting more and more excited. He picked a team, studied the players, and even joined an office pool. When Selection Sunday finally arrived, he and Sarah gathered with friends to watch the announcement.

As the names of the teams flashed across the screen, Jake felt a rush of anticipation. He was ready for the madness to begin.

And so, on the second week of March, Jake found himself glued to the TV, cheering wildly as his team fought their way through the tournament. He had finally experienced March Madness, and he understood why it was called that—because it was absolutely, wonderfully mad.
