Drake Basketball Makes History with Stunning Victory Over Ranked Opponent

Des Moines, IA — February 15, 2024 — The Drake Bulldogs men’s basketball team delivered a performance for the ages on Wednesday night, defeating the No. 12-ranked Creighton Bluejays in a thrilling 78-72 upset at the Knapp Center. The victory marks one of the most significant wins in program history and solidifies Drake’s status as a rising force in college basketball.

From the opening tip, the Bulldogs showcased their trademark grit and determination. Senior guard Tucker DeVries, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Year, led the charge with a game-high 28 points, including several clutch baskets in the final minutes. DeVries’ leadership and poise under pressure were instrumental in securing the win.

'This is what we’ve been working for,' said DeVries in a post-game interview. 'We knew we could compete with anyone in the country, and tonight we proved it. This is just the beginning for us.'

The Bulldogs’ defense was equally impressive, holding Creighton’s high-powered offense to just 42% shooting from the field. Junior forward Darnell Brodie dominated the paint with 12 rebounds and three blocks, while sophomore guard Conor Enright provided a spark off the bench with 14 points and relentless energy on both ends of the floor.

Head coach Darian DeVries, in his sixth season at the helm, praised his team’s resilience. 'Our guys never back down,' he said. 'They believe in each other, and they believe in what we’re building here. This win is a testament to their hard work and dedication.'

The victory sends shockwaves through the college basketball world, as Drake improves to 22-4 on the season and strengthens its case for an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs, currently leading the MVC, are poised to make their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years.

Fans packed the Knapp Center, creating an electric atmosphere that players and coaches credited as a key factor in the win. 'Our fans are the best in the country,' said Tucker DeVries. 'They give us that extra edge, and we couldn’t have done this without them.'

As the Bulldogs turn their attention to the remainder of the conference schedule, the win over Creighton serves as a statement to the rest of the nation: Drake basketball is here to stay. With March Madness on the horizon, the Bulldogs are determined to make this season one to remember.
