Jacques Villeneuve Announces Surprise Return to Racing in New Extreme E Series Team

In a stunning announcement that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport world, 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has revealed he will come out of retirement to compete in the 2025 Extreme E championship. The Canadian racing legend, now 53, will team up with fellow veteran driver and former rival David Coulthard under the banner of Team Phoenix Rising, a newly formed squad aiming to blend experience with sustainability in the electric off-road racing series.

Villeneuve, who last competed in a full-time racing series in 2013 (NASCAR), admitted that the call to return was unexpected. 'I never thought I'd be back in a race seat at this stage, but Extreme E’s mix of competition and environmental awareness really spoke to me,' he said at a press conference in Montreal. 'Plus, David [Coulthard] and I have been joking about teaming up for years—now it’s happening!'

The Extreme E series, which races in remote locations to highlight climate change, features electric SUVs competing in harsh off-road conditions. Villeneuve, known for his fearless driving style in F1 and IndyCar, joked that 'after surviving the chaos of the 90s CART series, a little desert racing should be a walk in the park.'

Mixed Reactions from the Racing World

Fans and analysts have been quick to react, with many expressing excitement over seeing the charismatic Villeneuve back in action. However, some have questioned whether the 53-year-old can still match the pace of younger competitors. Reigning Extreme E champion Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky welcomed the news, saying, 'Jacques is a legend—if he’s half as quick as he was in his prime, he’ll be a threat.'

Meanwhile, Villeneuve’s former F1 rival Damon Hill tweeted: 'First Coulthard, now Jacques? Guess I’d better dust off my helmet!'—sparking speculation that more retired champions could follow suit.

Team Phoenix Rising will make its debut at the upcoming Extreme E round in Sardinia, Italy, next month. Villeneuve has already begun testing the Odyssey 21 electric SUV and insists he’s 'not here to make up the numbers.'
