Florida Holds Off Houston in Thrilling Season Opener

Gainesville, FL – September 2, 2025 – In a highly anticipated season opener, the University of Florida Gators defeated the Houston Cougars 31-27 in a back-and-forth battle at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday night.

The game, which marked the first meeting between the two programs since 1999, lived up to the hype as both teams traded blows in a contest that came down to the final minutes. Florida quarterback Jaden Rashada delivered a clutch performance, throwing for 245 yards and two touchdowns, including a decisive 18-yard strike to wide receiver Eugene Wilson III late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Houston, led by dynamic quarterback Donovan Smith, kept the pressure on Florida’s defense all night. Smith accounted for 290 total yards (215 passing, 75 rushing) and three touchdowns, nearly leading the Cougars to an upset. However, a crucial interception by Florida safety Jordan Castell with under two minutes remaining ended Houston’s comeback hopes.

Florida’s running game also played a key role, with Montrell Johnson Jr. rushing for 98 yards and a touchdown. The Gators’ defense, while shaky at times, came up with critical stops in the red zone to preserve the win.

Houston head coach Willie Fritz, in his debut with the Cougars, praised his team’s effort but acknowledged the missed opportunities. 'We had our chances, but Florida made the plays when it mattered,' Fritz said. 'We’ll learn from this and get better.'

Florida (1-0) now prepares for a marquee matchup against Miami next week, while Houston (0-1) looks to rebound against Texas State.
