The stage is set for the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 after a thrilling qualifying weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 33-car starting grid features a mix of seasoned veterans, rising stars, and surprise performances that promise an unforgettable race next Sunday.

Pole Position: Palou Edges Out O’Ward in Nail-Biting Final Shootout

Reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing) secured his second Indy 500 pole position with a blistering four-lap average speed of 234.217 mph, narrowly beating Pato O’Ward (Arrow McLaren) by just 0.087 seconds. Palou, who won the 2023 Indy 500, looks poised to add another Borg-Warner Trophy to his collection.

'It’s an incredible feeling,' Palou said. 'The team gave me a rocket ship, and now we have to finish the job on race day.'

Front Row Dominated by Powerhouses

Joining Palou and O’Ward on the front row is two-time Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing), who stunned fans with a late surge in the Fast Six shootout. Sato, at 48 years old, proved age is just a number with a 233.891 mph average.

Big Names Face Uphill Battle

While the front of the grid features familiar contenders, some heavy hitters will have to fight through traffic:

Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) starts 5th, seeking his second Indy 500 win.

Will Power (Team Penske) qualified 9th, hoping to rebound after a disappointing 2024 race.

Kyle Larson (Hendrickcars.com / Arrow McLaren), the NASCAR crossover star, impressed with a 12th-place start in his Indy 500 debut.

Shockers and Heartbreakers

Josef Newgarden (Team Penske), last year’s winner, struggled in qualifying and will start 18th.

Romain Grosjean (Andretti Global) suffered a late crash in practice, forcing his team to a backup car—he’ll start 28th.

Marco Andretti (Andretti Herta Autosport) barely made the field, qualifying 31st in a dramatic last-chance run.

Bump Day Drama

The final row saw intense drama as Sting Ray Robb (AJ Foyt Racing) and Christian Rasmussen (Ed Carpenter Racing) fought to avoid being bumped. Ultimately, R.C. Enerson (Abel Motorsports) was the odd man out, missing the field by just 0.03 mph.
