Disney Announces New Animated Film Set in Ancient Japan

In an exciting reveal at Disney’s annual showcase event, the studio announced its next major animated feature: The Moonlit Ronin, a visually stunning adventure set in feudal Japan. The film, slated for a late 2026 release, follows a young warrior named Hikari who must recover a stolen artifact to break a curse threatening her village.

Disney’s Chief Creative Officer, Jennifer Lee, described the project as a 'love letter to Japanese folklore and artistry,' with animation inspired by traditional ink painting and ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The studio has partnered with renowned Japanese directors and cultural consultants to ensure authenticity.

Rumors suggest The Moonlit Ronin may introduce Disney’s first non-binary lead character, though details remain under wraps. The announcement has already sparked enthusiasm, with fans calling it 'a fresh direction for Disney’s storytelling.'
