Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar Announces Major Initiative to Boost Tech Startups in Detroit

Detroit, MI — May 15, 2025

U.S. Representative Shri Thanedar (D-MI) unveiled an ambitious new plan today aimed at revitalizing Detroit’s economy by fostering innovation and supporting minority-owned tech startups. The initiative, dubbed 'Motor City Innovates,' seeks to position Detroit as a leading hub for technology and entrepreneurship.

Thanedar, a successful entrepreneur-turned-politician, announced the program at a press conference in downtown Detroit, flanked by local business leaders and tech innovators. The $50 million public-private partnership will provide grants, mentorship, and infrastructure support to early-stage startups, with a focus on women and minority founders.

'Detroit has always been a city of resilience and reinvention,' Thanedar said. 'By investing in our homegrown talent, we can create high-paying jobs, attract top-tier talent, and ensure that the next generation of tech giants starts right here in Michigan.'

The congressman, who built a multi-million-dollar business before entering politics, emphasized his own journey as an immigrant entrepreneur. 'I know what it’s like to start with nothing but a dream,' he added. 'This initiative is about giving others the same opportunities I had.'

The plan has already garnered support from major investors, including Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert and several venture capital firms. If approved, the first round of funding could roll out by early 2026.

Critics question whether the program will deliver tangible results, but supporters argue that Thanedar’s business acumen and commitment to economic equity make him the right leader for the job.
