Howard University Expands STEM Programs, Scholarships

Howard University Announces New Initiative to Expand STEM Programs and Scholarships

Washington, D.C. – April 10, 2025 – Howard University, one of the nation’s leading historically Black universities, has unveiled a major new initiative aimed at expanding its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs and increasing scholarships for underrepresented students.

The initiative, titled 'Howard STEM Forward,' will invest $25 million over the next five years to enhance research facilities, recruit top-tier faculty, and provide financial support for students pursuing degrees in high-demand fields such as computer science, engineering, and biomedical research.

University President Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick emphasized the importance of the program in addressing diversity gaps in STEM industries. 'For decades, Howard has been a pipeline for Black professionals in medicine, engineering, and technology,' Dr. Frederick said. 'This initiative ensures that we continue to lead in innovation while creating more opportunities for students who have been historically excluded from these fields.'

The funding will also support partnerships with major tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Pfizer, to provide internships and job placements for Howard graduates. Additionally, the university plans to launch a new AI research lab in collaboration with the National Science Foundation.

Howard alumna and NASA engineer Dr. Jessica Watkins, who spoke at the announcement, praised the initiative. 'Programs like this open doors for the next generation of scientists and engineers,' she said. 'Howard’s commitment to excellence and equity is why it remains a cornerstone of Black academic achievement.'

The announcement comes as Howard celebrates a record number of applications for the 2025-2026 academic year, reinforcing its reputation as a top destination for students of color.
