Bernie Sanders Unveils Bold Plan for Universal Childcare in 2025

Burlington, VT – April 10, 2025

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) announced a sweeping new legislative proposal today aimed at establishing a federally funded universal childcare system in the United States. The plan, dubbed the 'Childcare for All Act,' seeks to provide free or low-cost childcare to every American family, regardless of income.

Speaking at a packed town hall in his home state of Vermont, Sanders framed the initiative as both an economic necessity and a moral imperative. 'In the richest country in the world, no parent should have to choose between paying rent and affording quality care for their child,' Sanders declared, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Key Provisions of the Plan:

Free childcare for families earning under 200% of the federal poverty line.

Sliding-scale fees for middle-class families, capped at 7% of household income.

Higher wages for childcare workers, with a federal minimum of $25/hour.

Funding through new taxes on billionaires and large corporations.

The proposal has already ignited fierce debate in Washington. Progressive lawmakers, including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), have pledged support, while Republicans have dismissed it as 'another big-government overreach.' Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) criticized the plan, calling it 'a socialist pipe dream that will bankrupt the country.'

Public Reaction

Supporters argue that affordable childcare is long overdue. 'I pay more for daycare than my mortgage,' said Jessica Morales, a single mother from Chicago who attended Sanders’ speech. 'This would change my life.'

Opponents, however, question the cost—estimated at $300 billion annually—and whether the federal government should play such a large role in childcare.

Sanders, undeterred, vowed to rally public support. 'If we can afford endless tax breaks for the wealthy, we can afford to take care of our children,' he said.

The bill is expected to be introduced in Congress next week, setting the stage for a major political battle in the 2025 legislative session.
