Houston Basketball Coach Kelvin Sampson Signs Contract Extension Amidst Rising Program Success

Houston, TX – April 8, 2025 – The University of Houston has secured the future of its men’s basketball program by signing head coach Kelvin Sampson to a multi-year contract extension, the school announced Monday. The deal comes on the heels of another dominant season for the Cougars, who have emerged as a perennial powerhouse under Sampson’s leadership.

Since taking over in 2014, Sampson has transformed Houston into a national contender, leading the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four berth in 2021 and a Big 12 Conference championship in their inaugural season in the league. This past year, the Cougars finished with a 28-6 record, earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament before falling in the Sweet 16.

Sampson, a two-time National Coach of the Year, has been widely praised for his defensive-minded approach and player development, turning Houston into one of the toughest teams in the country. Under his guidance, the Cougars have consistently ranked among the top defensive squads in the nation while producing NBA talent such as Quentin Grimes and Jarace Walker.

'Houston is home,' Sampson said in a statement. 'The support from our fans, administration, and players has been incredible. We’ve accomplished a lot, but there’s still more to achieve. Our goal remains the same—competing for championships.'

With the extension, Sampson is expected to continue building on Houston’s recent success as the program transitions into an even stronger recruiting position within the competitive Big 12. The Cougars are already projected as a preseason top-10 team for the 2025-26 season, with key players returning and a top-ranked recruiting class on the way.
