Local Hospital Celebrates Nurses Week with Heartfelt Tributes and Special Events

May 10, 2024 – As the nation honors the dedication and compassion of nurses during National Nurses Week (May 6-12), Mercy General Hospital in Springfield is going above and beyond to show appreciation for its hardworking nursing staff.

This year’s theme, 'Nurses Make the Difference,' reflects the critical role nurses play in patient care. To celebrate, the hospital has organized a week-long series of events, including:

Daily appreciation lunches sponsored by local businesses

Awards ceremonies recognizing outstanding nurses in different departments

Relaxation stations with massages and wellness breaks

Community thank-you cards, where patients and families can share personal stories of nurses who made an impact

'Nurses are the backbone of healthcare,' said Dr. Lisa Monroe, Chief Medical Officer at Mercy General. 'They work long hours, often under immense pressure, yet they continue to provide exceptional care with kindness. This week is our chance to give back to them.'

One standout honoree, ICU nurse Sarah Bennett, was surprised with the 'Nurse of the Year' award after a patient’s family nominated her for going the extra mile during a difficult recovery. 'I’m just doing my job,' Bennett said humbly. 'But it means the world to feel seen and appreciated.'

Across the country, hospitals, clinics, and communities are recognizing nurses through social media shoutouts, gift baskets, and public acknowledgments. The American Nurses Association (ANA) encourages everyone to take a moment this week to thank a nurse for their tireless service.

'To all nurses—thank you for your courage, your compassion, and your unwavering commitment to healing. You truly make the difference.'
