Hood Canal Bridge to Close for Emergency Repairs Following Storm Damage

Hood Canal, WA – May 6, 2025 – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced an emergency closure of the Hood Canal Bridge after severe weather caused significant damage to its floating structure. The closure, expected to last at least 48 hours, will disrupt travel between the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas, impacting thousands of commuters, freight deliveries, and emergency services.

Storm Damage Forces Immediate Action

Early this morning, WSDOT inspectors discovered structural concerns in the bridge’s pontoons following last night’s intense windstorm, which brought gusts exceeding 50 mph. Reports indicate that one of the bridge’s support systems sustained damage, raising safety concerns.

'Our top priority is ensuring the bridge is safe for travel,' said WSDOT Regional Administrator John Carlson. 'After a thorough assessment, we determined that immediate repairs are necessary to prevent further risk.'

Alternate Routes and Ferry Adjustments

With the bridge out of service, travelers are being directed to lengthy detours via US-101 around the canal or encouraged to use Washington State Ferries. WSDOT has coordinated with Kitsap Transit to add extra ferry runs between Southworth and Port Townsend to accommodate increased demand.

Local businesses, particularly those reliant on daily deliveries, are bracing for delays. 'This is going to hurt,' said Shelton-based truck driver Marcos Rivera. 'Everything moves across that bridge—groceries, supplies, you name it.'

Officials are urging residents to monitor WSDOT’s social media and website for real-time updates. If repairs proceed as planned, the bridge could reopen by Friday, but additional delays are possible if further damage is found.

This marks the first unplanned closure of the Hood Canal Bridge since 2022, when high winds prompted a brief shutdown. The 1.5-mile-long floating bridge, one of the longest of its kind in the world, has a history of weather-related vulnerabilities.

For now, travelers are advised to plan ahead, expect delays, and consider teleworking if possible. WSDOT promises updates as repairs progress.
