Heroic Nurse Saves Family from Fire

Local Hero Michele Evans Saves Family from House Fire

Springfield, IL – April 26, 2025

Michele Evans, a 34-year-old nurse from Springfield, is being hailed as a hero after rescuing a family of four from a burning home early this morning. The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. on Elm Street, trapping the Henderson family inside.

According to witnesses, Evans was driving home from her late shift at Mercy Hospital when she noticed smoke billowing from the house. Without hesitation, she pulled over, called 911, and rushed to the scene.

'I could hear screaming inside, and I knew I had to do something,' Evans told reporters. She broke a first-floor window with a nearby garden tool and helped two children, ages 6 and 8, climb to safety. Then, despite thick smoke, she guided their parents out just as firefighters arrived.

'The quick actions of Ms. Evans undoubtedly saved lives today,' said Fire Chief Daniel Ruiz. 'Her bravery and selflessness are extraordinary.'

The Henderson family suffered minor smoke inhalation but are expected to recover. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Evans, modest about her actions, said, 'I just did what anyone would do. I’m just glad they’re okay.'

City officials say they plan to honor Evans at next week’s council meeting for her heroic efforts.
