Nurse Saves Stranded Hikers in Storm

Local Hero Lauren Blackburn Saves Stranded Hikers in Dramatic Mountain Rescue

Asheville, NC – Lauren Blackburn, a 28-year-old nurse and avid hiker, is being hailed as a hero after rescuing two stranded hikers on Mount Mitchell during a severe storm late Thursday night.

Blackburn, who was hiking alone on a familiar trail, noticed distress signals near a steep ridge as heavy rain and fog rolled in. After calling 911, she ventured off-path and located a couple, Mark and Sarah Reynolds, who had slipped down an embankment and were unable to climb back up due to injuries.

'Lauren was our guardian angel,' said Sarah Reynolds. 'She stabilized Mark's sprained ankle, gave us her extra layers to keep warm, and stayed with us until rescue teams arrived.'

Emergency responders credited Blackburn’s quick thinking and medical training for preventing hypothermia and further injury. 'Without her actions, this could have been a tragic situation,' said Lt. Daniel Harris of the Asheville Mountain Rescue Unit.

Blackburn, modest about her heroism, told reporters, 'I just did what anyone would do. I’m just glad they’re safe.'

The Reynolds family plans to nominate Blackburn for a community bravery award. Meanwhile, local officials are reminding hikers to check weather conditions and carry emergency supplies before heading into the wilderness.
