Though it’s an extraordinarily common health condition, many people are unaware just how painful and disruptive endometriosis can be. However, one woman who suffers from the condition is using social media to spread awareness, and her recent endometriosis Instagram post is now going viral .
Endometriosis is a disease that occurs when lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus , and it’s believed to impact around 11% of women. But the uterine condition is still all-too-often shrouded in mystery , and, like many reproductive health issues, often times patients suffer in silence. But 27-year-old Thessy Kouzoukasone is attempting to spread awareness about the condition in the hopes that fellow sufferers will feel less alone.
A post shared by Thessy Kouzoukas (@thessy.k) on Jul 11, 2017 at 4:10pm PDT
Kouzoukas, an Australian native with a large social media following, posted the above shot of her body before and after a ruptured cyst last week, and explained just how crippling it is to live with the condition.
In the photo on the left, Kouzoukas shows her stomach three weeks after a ruptured cyst, and on the right, she shows her stomach after starting a medication called Synarel, which she says “stopped all my hormones and sent me into menopause at the age of 27.”

She says she never intended to share these particular photos, but was inspired by women who reached out to her, explaining that they too suffered from endo. After the photo went viral, Kouzoukas penned an essay for The Huffington Post in which she discussed her experience.
“My objective is to share my personal story, my struggle with the disease, in the hopes that other women who suffer from endometriosis will relate — and to educate both men and women without the disease, on the life-altering effects it has on many women around the world, even the women around you.”

Kouzoukas said she began experiencing endometritis as a young teenager when she first got her period. She wrote that it has impacted not just her daily life, but her fertility, and she wishes those around her had known more about the disease back when she began exhibiting symptoms 14 years ago.
We’re confident that Kouzoukas efforts will help lessen the stigma around reproductive diseases, and help so many women suffering through the same, often difficult experience. We wish her the very best as she continues on her journey!

List of Sister Girl Endometriosis Resources

Endometriosis is a common disease. Approximately 10% , or five million, American women are affected. Endometriosis is sited as the single most common causes of chronic pelvic pain in women and pelvic pain that has lasted for six months or longer.

Sister Girl Endometriosis Advocacy & Support

Endometriosis (en-doe-me-tree-O-sis) is a chronic disease were endometrial like tissue, similar to that which lines the uterus, exist throughout the body. It affects roughly 1 in 10 women and girls, which is approximately 200,000 million women worldwide.
The tissue a.k.a endometrium ( en-doe-me-tree-um ) that is lining the inside of your uterus abnormally begins to grow outside your uterus. These lesions can be found on the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, the bowel, the bladder, the ureters, the appendix, the gallbladder and on the membrane lining of the pelvic cavity (i.e. the peritoneum).
The clumps of tissue that grow outside your uterus are called implants. It typically grows on 3 main areas: on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the outer wall of the uterus (pelvis area). The endometrium can also spread to the intestines, or other organs in the belly and in rare cases, it can spread to areas beyond the belly.
Disease can even be found outside the pelvis and has impacted the lungs, the diaphragm and the sciatic nerve. The disease triggers an inflammatory reaction within the body causing pain and adhesions.
Pain. Where it hurts depends on where the implants are growing. You may have pain in your lower belly, rectum, vagina, or your lower back.
Pain may only occur before and during your periods or, sadly, all the time.
Some women experience more pain during and after sex, when they have a bowel movement, ect.
Abnormal bleeding. Some women have heavy periods, spotting or bleeding between periods, bleeding during and after sex, or blood in their urine or stool.
Trouble getting pregnant (infertility) and ectopic pregnancy.
You may also experience fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating or nausea, varying at different points throughout your cycle
Endometriosis varies from woman to woman. Some women do not know that they have it until they go to see a doctor because they cannot get pregnant and on average there’s a 7-10-year delay in diagnosis. You may ask, how is that possible? Lack of awareness. There are still so many people who have never heard the word Endometriosis before.
Not all treatments work well for all women with endometriosis. Also, endometriosis symptoms may return after the treatment is stopped or, in the case of surgery, as more time passes after the procedure.
Treatments for Pain from Endometriosis:
Pain medications may work well if pain or other symptoms are mild. These medications range from over-the-counter pain relievers to strong prescription pain relievers. The most common types of pain relievers are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also called NSAIDS. Evidence on the effectiveness of these medications for relieving endometriosis-associated pain is limited. Many people opt for a more alternative approach. Find what works well for you.
Research shows that some surgical treatments can provide significant, although short-term, relief from endometriosis-related pain.
It is important to understand what is planned during surgery because some procedures cannot be reversed, and others can affect a woman’s fertility. Therefore, women should discuss all available options with their healthcare providers before making final decisions about treatment. Ask your physician about Excision surgery and how it can benefit your specific case.
Healthcare providers may suggest one of the following surgical treatments for pain from endometriosis:
Laparoscopy . Which is the method used to definitively diagnose endometriosis. The surgeon uses an instrument to inflate the abdomen slightly with a harmless gas and then inserts a small viewing instrument with a light, called a laparoscope, into the abdomen through a small cut to see the growths.
Laparotomy . In this major abdominal surgery procedure, the surgeon may remove the endometriosis patches. Sometimes the endometriosis lesions are too small to see in a laparotomy.
Surgery to sever pelvic nerves . If the pain is in the center of the abdomen, healthcare providers may recommend cutting nerves in the pelvis to lessen the pain.
Two procedures are used to sever different nerves in the pelvis.
Presacral neurectomy severs the nerves connected to the uterus.
Laparoscopic uterine nerve ablation (LUNA) severs nerves in the ligaments that secure the uterus.
It is important to note that having a hysterectomy is not a cure nor treatment for Endometriosis.
