Georgia Tech Basketball Looks to Rebuild and Compete in the 2023-2024 Season

Atlanta, GA – After a challenging 2022-2023 campaign, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men’s basketball team is gearing up for a fresh start under head coach Josh Pastner. With a mix of returning veterans, promising newcomers, and a renewed focus on defense and team chemistry, the Yellow Jackets are determined to make noise in the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Last season, Georgia Tech finished with a 15-18 record, struggling to find consistency in a conference dominated by powerhouse programs like Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia. Despite flashes of brilliance, including an upset win over a ranked Miami team, the Yellow Jackets fell short of expectations and missed the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.

However, optimism is brewing in Atlanta as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Key players such as senior guard Kyle Sturdivant and junior forward Miles Kelly are expected to lead the charge. Kelly, who averaged 14.4 points per game last season, has been working on expanding his offensive repertoire and is poised for a breakout year.

'We’ve got a great group of guys who are hungry to prove themselves,' said Coach Pastner during a recent press conference. 'We’ve been focusing on defense, rebounding, and playing with a chip on our shoulder. The ACC is always tough, but we believe we can compete with anyone if we play our brand of basketball.'

The Yellow Jackets have also bolstered their roster with a strong recruiting class, highlighted by four-star recruit Isaiah Johnson, a dynamic guard known for his scoring ability and defensive tenacity. Additionally, the team added depth through the transfer portal, securing the services of 6’10' center James White from the University of Georgia, who is expected to provide much-needed size and rim protection.

Fans are particularly excited about the team’s potential to improve on the defensive end. Georgia Tech ranked in the middle of the pack in the ACC last season in terms of defensive efficiency, but with a renewed emphasis on discipline and communication, the coaching staff believes the team can become one of the conference’s elite defensive units.

The Yellow Jackets will face an early test in their non-conference schedule, with matchups against SEC opponents and a potential showdown in the Maui Invitational. These games will provide a glimpse of whether Georgia Tech has what it takes to compete on the national stage.
