Former Congressman George Santos Sentenced to Prison in Fraud Case

New York – October 10, 2024 – Disgraced former U.S. Representative George Santos was sentenced to 22 months in prison today after pleading guilty to multiple federal fraud charges, marking a dramatic fall from grace for the once-rising political star.

Santos, 36, who represented New York’s 3rd Congressional District before his expulsion from the House in December 2023, faced charges including wire fraud, money laundering, and making false statements to Congress. Prosecutors accused him of orchestrating a series of financial schemes, including diverting campaign funds for personal luxuries and fabricating key details about his background.

In a packed federal courtroom, U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert condemned Santos for a 'pattern of deceit' that 'undermined public trust.' Prosecutors had sought a three-year sentence, citing the brazenness of his crimes, while Santos' defense argued for leniency, citing his cooperation and remorse.

'Today’s sentence sends a clear message that no one is above the law, especially those elected to serve the people,' said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace in a statement following the sentencing.

Santos, who pleaded guilty in July, admitted to falsifying campaign finance reports, using donor money for personal expenses—including designer goods and vacations—and lying about his education, work history, and even his mother’s connection to the 9/11 attacks. His expulsion from Congress last year made him only the sixth representative in U.S. history to be ousted by colleagues.

As he left the courthouse, Santos declined to comment but earlier told reporters he was 'ready to face the consequences.' He must surrender to authorities by November 30 to begin his sentence.

The case has fueled debates over ethics in politics and vetting processes for candidates. Meanwhile, Santos' former district, covering parts of Long Island and Queens, is now represented by Democrat Tom Suozzi, who won a special election in February.

Santos will also serve two years of supervised release and must pay $250,000 in restitution to victims of his fraud schemes.
