Olympic Legend Gary Hall Jr. Launches Initiative to Teach Swimming in Underserved Communities

Phoenix, AZ – May 6, 2025 – Five-time Olympic gold medalist Gary Hall Jr. has announced an ambitious new initiative aimed at bringing swimming education to children in underserved communities across the United States. The program, dubbed 'Splash Forward,' seeks to reduce drowning rates and promote water safety among youth who lack access to pools and professional instruction.

Hall, now 50, remains one of the most decorated swimmers in U.S. history, known for his rivalry with Anthony Ervin and his electrifying performances in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. After retiring from competition, he founded The Race Club, a swimming training program, but has now shifted focus toward broader accessibility.

'Every child deserves the chance to learn how to swim, not just for sport, but for survival,' Hall said at a press conference. 'Drowning is preventable, and by providing resources and training, we can save lives.'

The Splash Forward initiative will partner with local schools, community centers, and nonprofits to build portable pools and train instructors in areas where swimming facilities are scarce. The program will initially launch in Arizona, Florida, and Texas—states with high drowning incidents among minority populations.

Hall’s efforts have already garnered support from fellow Olympians and major sponsors. 'Gary’s always been a fighter, both in and out of the pool,' said former teammate Natalie Coughlin. 'This is exactly the kind of leadership our sport needs.'

With drowning as the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under 14, Hall’s mission could make a life-saving difference. The first Splash Forward clinics are set to begin this summer.
