Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Everything you need to know about the 2021 Polaris RZR XP Turbo.
Fast, capable, affordable, and approachable
Scant options on the one available trim level
The 2021 Polaris RZR XP Turbo packs plenty of capability into an easily affordable, accessible package that can be fitted out as you like with wide support from the Polaris accessory catalog.
The 2021 Polaris RZR XP Turbo is the high-performance version of the XP 1000, and brings almost 60 additional horsepower to the party, along with bigger brakes to compensate. At 168 ponies, the XP Turbo’s spec sheet could embarrass a lot of compact cars, and it doesn’t have nearly as much weight to pull around.
The XP Turbo also represents something of a bargain as far as turbocharged RZRs go, ringing in at just about $21,000. You give up features like Ride Command that come standard on some of the higher-priced RZRs, but if you’re looking to go full steam ahead and you don’t care about tunes or navigation, the XP Turbo is a great option.
It gets the same Walker Evans Needle shocks that come on the naturally aspirated XP 1000, which says a lot about Polaris’ confidence in the strength of the setup, and means the XP Turbo will be at home in the dunes or the woods. Just faster this time, and with rortier noises.
Polaris threw new colors at the RZR XP Turbo for 2021, the engine got the ProStar brand and dropped “H.O.” from its moniker, and the price was bumped by a grand. Otherwise, it’s the same rig as the 2020.
There’s just the one, and it rings in at $20,999 before taxes, destination, and dealer fees. The rig looks handsome in either the Matte Sands Metallic livery or the Ghost Gray, with red and black accents.
The XP Turbo relies on Polaris’ 925cc ProStar turbocharged parallel twin, which develops 168 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. Polaris says it set the engine up to summon the entire herd of horsepower as quickly as possible, so you shouldn’t experience too much lag when you ask for the beans.
All that sauce is funneled through Polaris’ PVT continuously variable transmission, which has low and high ranges and reverse. That transmission serves duty in a battalion of Polaris’ offerings, and it’s a smooth operator with fast takeup and linear feel.
The transmission channels the power through the company’s High Performance True On-Demand 2WD/AWD transfer case. There is an alphabet soup of drivetrain names in Polaris’ range, but they’re not arbitrary. High Performance True On-Demand is designed to be stronger than the offerings on less powerful rigs to handle the extra twist from the turbo.
Walker Evans Needle shocks are a premium setup named for a dude who just about invented desert racing. They make their namesake proud, and the XP Turbo uses them to great effect. It’ll suck up a whooped-out desert wash with poise at speed, then turn around and keep you from feeling like you’re on a heaving oil tanker in the turns.
It’s telling that these shocks reside on a huge range of the Polaris catalog, and you’ve got to go a long way up the price ladder before they get replaced.
With great power comes great big obstacles coming at you faster than you thought, so Polaris upped the ante with the XP Turbo’s brakes. It gets three-pot calipers up front and two-pots out back, up from the standard XP’s two-pot front and rear. They won’t rip your eyeballs out of your head, but you shouldn’t be wanting for stopping power unless you’re really being dumb.
The next heading covers utility, but to put it kindly that ain’t what the XP Turbo is for.
Ergonomics are purposeful and driver-focused but rely on hard plastic surfaces more or less throughout the rig. Both driver and passenger seats are heavily bolstered, and the driver’s seat can move back and forth. Seatbelts are height adjustable to suit a wide range of drivers and passengers.
Total payload is 740 pounds, and cargo box payload is 300 pounds, just like the XP 1000. The XP Turbo is not rated to tow.
There is one XP Turbo trim, and it does not feature Ride Command or a stereo. Instead, you get the standard palette of analog speedometer and tach and a 4-inch LCD screen readout that covers total miles, trip miles, gear position, fuel, temperature, hours, voltage, and maintenance interval.
Polaris supplies RZRs with a six-month, unlimited-mileage warranty.
