Melville Martin only visited Filoli once, but what the Southern California man saw inspired him to will his collection of 17th and 18th century furniture and decorative objects to the historic estate when he died. Nearly a year later, Filoli has integrated Martin's bequest into the Georgian revival house, replacing previous items that were on loan. The furniture features double benches, settees and a Queen Anne chair, and other objets d'art include 10 handmade sailing ships, 25 oil paintings and a leather-bound King James Bible . Glass, pottery and porcelain pieces circa 1675-1775, needlework, lace, crystal and other antiquities were also among the 185 boxes willed to the estate.

Swing on St. Patrick's Day with Jeff Filippi 's 18-piece big band, Backswing, at a special St. Patrick's Day Dinner Dance in Redwood City. The salmon dinner starts at 6 p.m., with dancing afterward. The event benefits the Veterans Memorial Senior Center computer education program.

Hofstadter's lecture, in honor of annual Darwin Day, is sponsored by the Humanist Community .
