In 1943, a crematorium was built in Ravensbrück, from that moment it turned into a real death camp. The bodies were burned and all the ashes were dumped into the lake. About the ghettos, as well as about the concentration camps, the Nazis made propaganda films. Germans and residents of other countries were shown a beautiful picture where happy and satisfied prisoners work for the benefit of the state. For these paintings, the healthiest inhabitants of the ghetto were selected, usually they were "newcomers", they were washed and dressed in clean uniforms, they smiled on the frames. Participation was usually promised early release or more food. In fact, Jews were brought into the ghetto on pain of death . "Once, on the main street of the ghetto - Ludzas - a young man was beaten. They were forced to lie face down in the pit and then shot in the back of the head. Many of those killed were children. According to eyewitnesses, when the ditches were buried, not all people were dead yet.

"Women with children were driven to the shooting, there were a lot of children. They marched in columns under heavy police protection. By about the end of December 1941, in the morning, at about 8 o'clock, the German nazis were driving three large batches of school-age children to extermination. Each party had at least 200 children. Children cried terribly, called their mothers, cried out for help. All these children were exterminated in the Rumbul forest. Children were not shot, but killed by machine guns and pistol grips on the head and dumped directly into the pit," one witness recalled.

After that, Jews from Germany and other European countries began to be brought to the Riga ghetto. At least 70,000 Jews became victims of the Holocaust in Latvia. The ghettos were usually home to strong and healthy people who had to work hard.

Despite the dire prospect, many people in the camps believed in the best. If children were born, they were killed by a poison injection. Prisoners had to buy food in the ghetto themselves. Of course, it was scarce and it was of poor quality. There was a distribution of cards, the more a person worked, the more he received. Some tried to bring food out of the city, but this rarely happened because of the inspections. Everyone was beaten, sometimes to death. Usually the diet consisted of 200 g of brown bread per day, one serving of spoiled fish per week, frozen potatoes and cabbage.

The ghetto had its own prison, where people were taken for the slightest disobedience. Rarely did anyone return from it alive. Men were hanged and women were taken to the cemetery and shot. One of the expositions of the museum is devoted to the fate of Jews from North Africa. It was especially difficult for them to settle in Europe. If they were placed in a ghetto and managed to escape, the locals did not want to help them, much less hide them. For the locals, they looked different, they did not look like compatriots. Even in the ghetto itself, it was difficult for them to establish contact with other Jews. Many of them, after the end of the war and emigration to Israel, also faced misunderstanding. In early November 1943, the ghetto was liquidated, and its inhabitants were transferred to the Riga-Kaiserwald concentration camp. I must say that in October 1944, when the Soviet army was already advancing and the Germans felt the imminent collapse, they began to destroy the prisoners. People were sent in large groups to the crematorium. "It was going to be a terrible day. We will have to see with our own eyes the area of the camp, which we were usually afraid to even approach, so as not to look at the terrible sight - the destruction of people. The team was divided into two parts. One part was given the task of bringing coal to the crematorium, and the second was sent to work in the crematorium itself. Everyone knew, including those who didn't want to know, that the fascist army was retreating uncontrollably. Realizing that the death was already very close, the fascists began to intensively destroy the traces of their brutal atrocities, turning all living things in the camp into ashes. The crematorium operated at full capacity day and night. It was scary to look in the direction of the building, where human bodies turned into ashes. It was frightening to look in the direction of the gas chamber, where people doomed to death were previously poisoned with gas, not in order to alleviate their suffering, but to facilitate the work of the executioners, since a living person reluctantly climbs into the furnace. We knew that due to the overload of the gas chamber, gasification was carried out very hastily and often people were pushed into the furnaces still half-alive, "recalled Meir Levenstein. The terrible time is long over. But it seems that the suffering of thousands of innocent people has been forever imprinted on the territory of the Riga ghetto. You can't help but think what a terrible life these people lived and what a painful death they died, never seeing the triumph of victory and justice.
