Thread potential rising.

I don't know what the guy responsible for the environment was thinking - they probably gave him a van-load of vodka and told him to go for it - but he was too good at his job. The character art clashes horribly with all those nice backgrounds.

This is good stuff, made me quite nostalgic.

Insert clever insult here

It's pretty obvious they had 3 different artists - one for backgrounds, one for the character "cutouts" and a third for the separate "action" images, as there's a noticeable difference between the three.

Also, purple hairdo in the 80's? Now I've seen it all

Whaddya mean "character art"? All the girls are mascots of different russian national chans. It's not like they were made up specifically for this game.

Yeah, my biggest gripe with this game was the fact that the protagonist was such an unlikeable emo cunt who kept on whining about how he needs to find out what is going on and get home. Jesus fucking Christ, you are put into a camp with a group of busty teenage girls and you are the only guy there (Except the obvious robo-homos) and all of the girls are jumping around you like rabbits in heat and all you can do is whine ? Any normal 17 year old would use his dick as a dowsing rod to lead him to the forest of pussy there.

If that is how the extreme Fedora gentlemen feel and act, then I pity them, I really do, but Im not surprised they aren't getting any.

This isn't one of the chans though. Apparently it's just an insert, this seems to be the most popular one as far as vocaloids go (at least judging by the amount of porn vs other ones).

It's one of the Vocaloids, seems one of the chans wasn't especially original.

Laws, to the portuguese, are only sugestions.

I was a fatass and hated all uniformed activities as a kid. We did have scouts but it was not a compulsory deal.

Making the camp 'pioneer camp' as opposed to regular one was just to have an excuse for girls there to wear uniforms anyway.

Can't have weaboo sim without uniforms.

[AUTHOR’S NOTE: The following article spoils major plot elements of Everlasting Summer and Doki Doki Literature Club . It was also written in July of 2021, and it discusses events that were happening around that time.]
We’ve all (probably, hopefully) been holing up inside for over a year now when it seems like vaccinations will make reconnecting with the outside world close-at-hand. People are going back to restaurants, I’m moving halfway across the country… What better time than now to play an almost decade-old Russian dating sim on my iPhone?
And what better time than now, when I should be packing and taking care of any number of other things to get my life in order (like editing those Digimon and Bleach videos that I’m sure you’re all patiently waiting for), is there for me to write a more in-depth reading than necessary review of it?
To be frank, I’ve been stressed and playing a goofy dating sim seemed like a good way to pass the time.
This is not, as it turns out, just a goofy dating sim.
This is a weird, interesting dating sim that had a cult following because of its mature, psychological themes, adult elements, and strange fourth-wall-breaking story.
No, this game is not Doki Doki Literature Club (a game very near and dear to my heart), but it is incredibly interesting to me on its own merits.
Everlasting Summer is a game by the incredibly on-the-nose Russian game dev team “Soviet Games” in 2010, with the English release coming out around 2013.
If TVTropes is to be believed (a statement that should immediately inspire your scrutiny), Everlasting Summer was created by a group of people who were inspired by their own experiences posting on the Russian equivalents of 4Chan and Reddit, largely about anime and other adjacent online properties.
Such inspirations are apparent in Everlasting Summer ’s genre, visuals, and themes, with characters like the delinquent Alisa Dvachevskaya having her name inspired by an inside joke on the message board and characters directly ripped from other media properties (i.e. the memetically popular Japanese Vocaloid-music-video character Hatsune Miku and little-known Soviet-live-action-TV character Elektronik) appearing in the game with recontextualized personalities and backgrounds.
The game experienced a lot of problems in its development cycle due to conflicting perspectives on what the story should be about– this would explain why many of the CGs look disjointed and different from one another, as different artists were handling it at different times. It may also explain the level of variation in tone and theming between routes (i.e. Ulyana’s largely literalist route that follows conventional rules for the world vs. Miku’s route where the entire world is rewritten halfway through to be an amateur film crew shooting a movie).
Despite its allegedly fraught production, Everlasting Summer enjoyed a pretty intense period of popularity in the early and mid-2010s, with multiple mods being released for the game and the Steam version enjoying an “Overwhelmingly Positive” review status after collecting over 40,000 user reviews.
The game was originally an eroge, which is to say it was a visual novel featuring sex scenes, but these can be disabled through a menu in some releases and are outright gone from others (such as the one I downloaded from the Apple store).
While Soviet Games has yet to release a new game since Everlasting Summer in the time since, their next title, Love, Money, Rock n’ Roll, has a demo out, and I would expect that that game will also enjoy no small amount of popularity, as well.
But before we go into my summary of the game or my personal feelings, let’s take care of one quick step.
Everlasting Summer, most basically, is about a 20-or-30-something aged man named Semyon being thrust by some supernatural force into a Pioneer Camp (the Soviet equivalent of a gender-integrated American Boyscout/Girlscout Camp) in the 1980s. There, he realizes that he has become a teenager expected to participate in camp life, and over the course of the game, the player is encouraged and expected to have Semyon romance one of a handful of girls.
As stated prior, the original version of the game had Semyon engage in sexual intercourse with these women on-screen while the edited versions simply leave it to be implied that sexual intercourse occurred. The characters are all implied to be at least 15 years old, but it’s made clear that Semyon’s sexual partners (which is to say, the girls he is having sex with at the time he is having sex with them) are no more than 18, if that. Ulyana, the youngest potential romantic partner at age 14, does not engage in sexual intercourse with Semyon on-screen or through implication.
So let’s be blunt and put this out there:
Everlasting Summer is a game where an adult man has sex with teenage girls, largely while obfuscating his true age and situation, and the game does not frame this is being a problem. While the player/protagonist/Semyon never has sex with Ulyana,
While I think the game is incredibly rich with its theming and is ripe for artistic and cultural analysis, I do not want to lose sight of these issues. And yes, I will maintain that these are issues, because it also feeds into the sexualization of the bodies of underage women and even asks the player to view these bodies sexually through the ideas of a man who is at least a decade their senior.
While I think the game doesn’t feel 100% comfortable about this problem either (based on how the adult Semyon outside of the camp can only romantically continue on with adult versions of each of the love interests), I would hope that we can ALL agree that a 20-or-30 something-year-old man becoming sexually intimate with High Schoolers is a bad thing that we shouldn’t let happen in real life and it’s dicey to portray it in media without some level of scrutiny.
With all of that in mind, let me tell you the in-game story of Everlasting Summer .
We begin the game with a man named Semyon, a depressed 20-or-30-something who lives alone in an apartment paid for by his parents in a nondescript Russian city. Semyon reflects on how all of his life’s pursuits have amounted to nothing but him cruising around online consuming media and reading forum posts, and he wanders out to get some fresh air. Upon trying to take a bus back home, he finds himself at this mysterious Soviet Pioneer Camp (called Camp Sovyonok) populated with teenagers. These teenagers welcome Semyon as if he, naturally, is just another Camper. Upon finding a mirror, Semyon realizes that he indeed does appear to be a teenager again.
Finding himself in this camp led by the whimsical and inept counselor Olga Dmitrievna, Semyon is left to navigate a week where he’s going to get the option to get closer to one of a few female Campers:
The game’s story takes place over the course of one week at this camp, during which time Semyon will go through some wacky slice-of-life-anime shenanigans and some psychological horror events and, after which time, Semyon will leave, one way or another. How Semyon leaves the camp depends on the player’s choices, with a relatively standard Visual Novel cause-and-effect tree for endings.
Character-specific endings that can generally be categorized as “Good” or “Bad” make up the bulk of the game’s endings.
Generally speaking, the Bad endings involve the player having Semyon either reject being kind to the other Campers in any way shape or form (resulting in the worst endi
